July 23, 2012 – According to a recent report from The Information, Meta has stopped production of the Quest Pro and canceled plans for future “Pro” series XR hardware. However, Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth has denied the claims, saying “Don’t believe everything you read.”

The Quest Pro is a $1,000 (currently around RMB 7,180) mixed reality headset from Meta, aimed at professionals, offering a high-performance and high-resolution virtual reality experience. The product, which launched in October 2022, was initially priced at $1,500 but dropped in price by $500 just a few months later. Meanwhile, the Quest 2, a virtual reality headset aimed at the average consumer, has gone through a number of price changes, ranging from $300 to $400.

According to The Information, Meta has stopped ordering new parts for the Quest Pro from its suppliers and has suspended development of the entire “Pro” line, meaning that the company is unlikely to release a second-generation Quest Pro headset. However, Bosworth refuted that claim in an Instagram Stories post yesterday, saying that his team is working on multiple prototype headsets in parallel for all of its projects, with no certainty as to which will become the final product. He implied that The Information’s information came from an employee who was unhappy that his project had been axed.

I have to explain this every year,” Bosworth said. There was no Quest Pro 2 as a headset until we decided there was. I mean, there were a lot of prototype head units — a lot of them — that were in parallel development. Some of them we’d say, ‘This isn’t right,’ and then we’d shut down the project. Some of them we’ll say, ‘This one’s right,’ and then we’ll accelerate development. What you need to understand is that there’s no name for it until it’s officially launched. So there may or may not be a Quest Pro 2. Don’t believe what you read about what’s been stopped or started, a lot of times it comes from someone who’s not happy that their particular project got the axe and other projects didn’t.”

Nonetheless, Quest Pro has been less than stellar from the start. The product never clearly defined its raison d’etre, and the company vaguely positioned it as a workstation for professionals. In reality, Quest Pro is more of a developer’s kit for studios looking to develop consumer apps for the cheaper Quest 3, which will launch in autumn 2023 for $500. In the meantime, Quest Pro users have reported a number of usability issues since its release, giving the impression that it’s not as ready for the market as the company had hoped.

Counterpoint Research today released a report saying that shipments of XR (extended reality) devices will exceed the 10 million mark for the first time in 2021, up 60 percent year-over-year.

The report points out that the growth rate has slowed this year because the new mass-grade devices have not yet been launched, but the market is expected to accelerate the pace of growth next year, with annual shipments reaching about 48 million units in 2025.

Meta has recently announced its new Quest Pro, which Counterpoint Research says also has eye and face tracking capabilities, unlike previous devices that only had hand tracking.

In addition, the report says competition will intensify with the expected release of Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 and Apple’s first XR headset next year. Device specifications will be the focus of attention as major OEMs move in for a piece of the action.

iFixit has taken apart the Quest Pro, Meta’s new high-end VR headset priced at $1500 (about 10800 yuan) 1500, and their conclusion is that it’s a “fascinating, largely unrepairable device.

iFixit first disassembled the battery, which is located on the back of the headset. It’s a dual-cell 20.58Wh battery, and it’s curved, which is very rare.

On the front of the headset, a teardown revealed that the shiny front panel wasn’t glass, but some “shiny plastic.” After taking it off, you can see the components, cameras and circuits on the front of the device, which looks cool, it would be nice to have a version with a transparent panel.

iFixit also found a small rectangular module in the middle of the Quest Pro, which appears to be the location of the depth sensor.

After unscrewing a lot of screws, iFixit finally found the lens (also plastic, not glass) and the motherboard with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 1 chip on it. iFixit also took apart the handle, which has its own camera, as well as a thumbstick, and a lithium-ion battery rated at 10.85Wh.

The internal structure of the Quest Pro is very delicate, and disassembly is also very troublesome. iFixit said in the video: “146 screws, countless cables, and sometimes a seemingly counter-intuitive design made this teardown the hardest we’ve done in a long time. And, aside from changing the battery, It also doesn’t seem to be easy to fix.”

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook’s parent company Meta, talked about the price of the company’s newly announced Quest Pro VR headset in an interview on Tuesday, saying that the $1,499.99 pricing is just a “keeper” to allow more people to experience the metaverse by buying the hardware. To allow more people to experience the metaverse by buying the hardware.

Mark Zuckerberg also took the opportunity to take a dig at rival Apple, saying that Apple priced its devices “as high as possible.

He said, “Usually, people make hardware and then want to make a profit from it. That’s what Apple does, for example, is make hardware and then charge as much as they can.”

Mark Zuckerberg says he wants to go the other way.

“I do think there are still people who are going to come into this space and then realistically say, ‘We’re going to build the best hardware in this space, and we’re going to sell it at a guaranteed cost in some cases.'”

Mark Zuckerberg said that’s what Meta is doing with its latest VR headset, Quest Pro, priced at just $1,499.99. The company also eventually plans to launch Quest 3, priced between $300 and $500, he said.

Mark Zuckerberg believes Meta’s goal is to get as many users as possible into the metaverse.

“I think that business strategy is consistent with our mission, which is to connect people and get people there, because if you want to build a whole new social experience, you have to get people there.”

Zuckerberg said software and services are the areas where he really wants to make money.

At Meta Connect 2022, Meta officially announced the Meta Quest Pro, a new VR headset that introduces office scenarios to Meta’s virtual world and adds eye tracking, Pancake optics, better controllers and more.

The VR headset device is aimed at creative people such as architects and architects, bringing their office scenes into the meta-universe. Last year, Meta released a Beta version of Meta Horizons Workrooms, creating VR spaces for team members to collaborate.

Meta Quest Pro extends existing functionality by adding more expressive avatars that more accurately portray emotions through eye tracking and face reading technology. It also adds breakout rooms, similar to those on Zoom, to create a separate room for teams in larger presentations.

Next year, individuals will also be able to join the studio with Zoom. In addition, Meta Quest Pro has improved Pancake optics with higher contrast than Meta Quest 2 to display text clearly in VR and reduce the size of the front of the headset.

Meta also added sticky notes, 3-D models (coming next year), three virtual screens and a Magic Room, a hybrid system that connects remote individuals with those actually present in the room. The Meta Quest Pro controller also features a 360-degree range of motion, including precise gestures, and provides haptic feedback, such as vibration.

In addition to this, Meta also mentions its partnership with Microsoft to bring productivity tools to the Meta Quest 2 and Pro. These tools include the integration of Microsoft Teams with Meta Quest, allowing users to share an immersive meeting experience. Individuals can access personalized apps, settings and content through Microsoft 365 on Meta Quest products.

Likewise, users can interact with 2D content such as Word and Excel documents in Meta Quest’s VR space. In addition, users can use their Meta Avatars to join Microsoft team meetings through the studio and enable security and management through Azure Active Directory and Microsoft Intune.

Meta and Microsoft will also work with Accenture to “change the way they interact with employees, interact with customers or create products and services in the Metaverse. As a result, individuals interested in joining the software vendor program to provide AR/VR/XR-related solutions can do so.

The Meta Quest Pro is scheduled to hit the market on the 25th of this month and is priced at $1,500. The retail package includes the headset, Quest Touch Pro grip, charging dock, pressure-sensitive pen tip (grip accessory), and a partial hood (a full hood is also available). The developer claims that Meta Quest Pro is the first portable device to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ platform, with significant improvements in computing power and power efficiency.

The optical system has been improved by replacing the Fresnel lens with a Pancake lens, reducing the thickness of the optical module (TTL) by 40%, while providing a clear and sharp visual effect. Due to the multiple folding of the light path, the Pancake lens is less efficient, so the development team chose a customized quantum dot LCD module with 500-zone backlight control to improve the contrast ratio by 75% and color gamut by 1.3 times (compared to Quest 2).

Quest Pro’s external camera has four times the pixel density of Quest 2, allowing for full-color perspective and providing users with a powerful AR experience. Also, to make it easier for users to switch back and forth between the virtual and real worlds, Quest Pro features an open design that allows users to add a magnetic partial hood to the device when focusing on the VR world (an isolated full hood will be available as an accessory at the end of the year).

The new Quest Touch Pro grip is backward compatible with Quest 2 and can be purchased separately for $300. The new grip has a built-in three-axis independent sensor that provides omnidirectional 360-degree spatial positioning even when the headset is out of view.

To alleviate users’ concerns, Quest Pro disables facial tracking and eye tracking by default. If users choose to turn on these features, the biometric data read will only be stored locally and will not be shared with Meta or third parties.

Meta announced that the Quest Pro will co-exist with the Quest 2, and that the company will continue to provide technical support and content updates for the latter, which is currently available with the following accessories.

Full visor ($50, available November 22nd): an isolated visor that quickly attaches to the Quest Pro headset.

Portable charging dock ($80, available the same day): charges the grip and any Quest headset using the USB-C port.

Incase’s Quest Pro Carrying Case ($120, on sale the same day): stores the device itself and accessories, and provides lightweight protection.

Quest Pro VR earbuds ($50, available on the same day): isolate background noise and work with an isolated blackout mask to create a peak moment of social death for the user.

An image posted by Facebook user Ramiro Cardenas of what appears to be the packaging for the “Meta Quest Pro” virtual reality (VR) headset has surfaced online, which he claims was left in a hotel room. The device on display appears to resemble the Project Cambria headset that Meta has been publicly teasing since late last year.

The images, in turn, emerged a month before Meta’s Connect event on Oct. 11, which is in line with the timeline that the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the company would reveal its next VR headset.

Cardenas reportedly originally shared the images in the comments section of a post on the Oculus Quest 2 Facebook group and said they were forgotten. It’s a remarkable story, but not without precedent, with events like the iPhone 4 prototype left in a bar in 2010 being the most notorious of this type of incident, as well as the still-unreleased Pixel 7 recently being sold on eBay and the Pixel Watch prototype being lost in a restaurant.

It’s hard to see a lot of detail in the picture alone, but the top left corner of the package bears the label “Meta Quest Pro” and a graphic showing the black VR headset and controller. In addition, Cardenas also provided a close-up of the label attached to the box, which reads “not for resale – engineering samples. In addition, he told The Verge that the person who left the headsets behind later claimed the devices.

In July, Bloomberg reported that developer Steve Moser found a reference to “Oculus Pro” in Meta’s code, so it’s possible this is the name Meta has decided on for the upcoming device.
