The latest reports suggest that TSMC’s next-generation 3nm process, N3, will be responsible for Apple’s M2 Pro and M2 Max. Apple has apparently placed a large order with the Taiwanese chip supplier, suggesting that the Cupertino tech giant will be paying its partner huge sums of money to secure the first 3nm wafers.

The news comes from Commercial Times, and the N3 process means the new MacBook Pro will get better performance and higher efficiency than the previously rumored 5nm process.

On top of that, the report says the M2 Pro, codenamed Rhodes Chop, will have a 10-core CPU and 20-core GPU. The M2 Max will be the more powerful of the two, codenamed Rhodes 1C, and is said to have up to a 12-core CPU and 38-core GPU.

As for the M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme, TSMC is said to be scrambling to fulfill Apple’s orders. The M2 Ultra, codenamed Rhodes 2C, is said to have double the number of CPU and GPU cores compared to the M2 Max.

The M2 Extreme is probably Apple’s most powerful custom chip to date and is likely to appear in the company’s Mac Pro. It should come in two configurations, one with a 24-core CPU and 76-core GPU, with the high-end configuration boasting up to 48 CPU cores and 152 GPU cores. Given the difficulties associated with manufacturing 3nm wafers, TSMC is likely to face many challenges in fulfilling its orders. This uphill battle may mean that the M2 Pro and M2 Max MacBook Pro models will not be available to customers in large numbers.

With the launch of the new iPad Pro, iPad and Apple TV this week, Apple’s attention is now turning to the Mac lineup. MacRumors says Apple plans to launch new high-end MacBook Pro and Mac mini models with M2 series chips in November this year.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said in this week’s newsletter that macOS Ventura will be released on Monday, October 24, and will include support for the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. The new MacBook Pro will reportedly come with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, but he doesn’t think there will be much else changed about the two laptops.

As for the Mac mini, Gurman has previously said that Apple is working on new models based on the M2 and M2 Pro chips. For now, it seems likely that the new Mac computers will be released directly on Apple’s website in November via a press release.

Gurman noted that Apple has announced new Mac computers in November several times in recent years, including the first-generation 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2019 and three M1-powered Mac models in 2020.

The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips were released in October 2021 and have been completely redesigned with new features such as “fringes” and the addition of HDMI, MagSafe and SD card readers.

Last time around, Apple launched the base Mac mini with the M1 chip in November 2020, although the company is still selling a more expensive Intel version with Core i5 and Core i7 processors.

As for the Mac Pro, Gurman doesn’t see this high-end model arriving until 2023, with a new Apple chip. He has previously said that the next Mac Pro will be powered by the M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme chips, while the next MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro and 24-inch iMac are also expected to launch next year.

Apple is reportedly working on the M2 and M2 Pro edition instead of releasing a new Mac mini with an M1 Pro chip as planned. In 2020, Apple released the first M1 chip in its current Mac mini. Numerous rumours have suggested that the new device could be powered by the M2 or M2 Pro, and it has long been expected that the company will upgrade the device with the new Apple silicon.

M2 and M2 Pro Mac Mini coming soon?

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg claimed in the most recent edition of his weekly newsletter that Apple had been working on the M1 Pro-powered Mac mini that was scheduled to debut later this year or at the beginning of 2023. However, it appears that the company has abandoned those plans in favour of concentrating solely on Mac mini devices powered by the M2 and M2 Pro.

Gurman gave a few additional details about the upcoming gadgets, but in a previous newsletter in June, he mentioned that the M2 and M2 Pro-powered Mac minis are still in the early stages of development, indicating that it might be some time before they are made available to the general public.

The M2 chip will power the new Mac mini, which has the codename J473. Contrarily, the M2 Pro Max mini, code-named J474, will have four effective CPU cores and eight performance cores. They have also stated that Apple has no plans to release a Mac mini model equipped with the M2 Max or Ultra chips; these will likely be reserved for the Mac Pro.
