As reported by the foreign media on July 18, with the official launch of the M2 version of MacBook Air, users who have pre-ordered have been receiving the new machine one after another. The Mac series that once seemed “irrelevant” seems to be more “powerful” than ever. But what happened to the iPad line, which was once expected to be productive? In this regard, three senior digital editors shared their feelings.

First, a digital editor named Daniel said that while the product positioning of the new MacBook Pro had been questioned back in the fall of last year. But now it seems that with the improvements in mainstream laptops and the increasingly macOS-like iPadOS, the line between these products seems to have become more blurred. However, in terms of real-world usage scenarios, there is still a clear gap between the two products.

The next digital editor, who is pondering whether to buy the new MacBook Air or the “iPad+keyboard,” said that although the MacBook line has been improved in recent years, it still does not have a touch screen like other brands. iPad has gradually converged to a laptop in recent years. The iPad has gradually converged to a laptop in recent years. However, as the iPad continues to enrich its functions, its price is also getting higher. Although in terms of functionality is not fully comparable to a laptop, but the price is infinitely closer to a laptop.

Finally, a digital editor named Scott said that buying M2 MacBook Air as a personal laptop upgrade is a good choice. He believes that the iPad is not a complete replacement for laptops at this stage. Although within 2022, the iPad will achieve more about productivity through the optimization of the system, but it must be admitted that the gap between iPad and MacBook is still obvious.

Regarding the news of the new iPad Pro, it was previously reported that Apple is expected to launch the new product in this fall. It is reported that this product is likely to be equipped with the latest version of the M2 chip. However, the improvement in productivity will still be limited to the iPadOS aspect. The industry believes that the boundaries between Mac products and iPad products are currently approaching infinitely, but it is still difficult to choose how to choose in the end. The reason for this is that Apple’s solution still seems to be a “simultaneous purchase”, but this is obviously unreasonable.

While the new MacBook Air certainly offers a big performance boost because of the M2 chip, the fanless design makes it impossible to control internal temperatures well in most situations. Based on real-world measurements of sustained workloads, the M2 MacBook Air loses 25 percent of its performance under high load compared to the M2 MacBook Pro.

According to a review video from The Verge, the M2 MacBook Air will automatically slow down once its internal temperature exceeds the recommended limit. While the M2 is more powerful than the M1 in terms of performance, it can’t perform without adequate cooling. This is confirmed by the results of real-world testing.

Using scoring software such as Cinebench R23 is usually not an accurate simulation of high load situations because their tests usually last only a few seconds and do not accurately reproduce CPU performance under high load. Therefore, The Verge ran a continuous 30-minute round-robin test in a multi-core test.

In the same test situation, the MacBook Pro with the same M2 chip (and one fan built-in) did not experience a slowdown, while the MacBook Air was unable to maintain the same high frequency as the other MacBook devices and lost 25 percent of its performance in the multi-core test.

Fortunately, M2 performance is higher compared to its predecessor, with the M1 MacBook Air losing 21 percent of its performance after running Cinebench R23 multicore scores for 30 minutes and the M2 MacBook Air losing just 13 percent.

Apple has just officially announced on their official website that the MacBook Air with M2 chip will be available for pre-order on July 8 (this Friday), and will be officially shipped on July 15. According to the official store, each consumer is still limited to two units, providing a 13-inch M2 chip 8 + 256GB 8-core graphics and a 13-inch M2 chip 8 + 512GB 10-core graphics, two versions to choose from, priced from 9499 yuan.

Although the price has been adjusted upward compared to the M1 version, the new MacBook Air brings huge upgrades in both appearance and design as well as performance.

First of all, in terms of appearance, the screen is upgraded to a 13.6-inch bangs screen with brightness up to 500nit, narrower bezels, a front camera upgrade 1080p, etc.

The whole machine is only 11.3mm thick and weighs 2.7 pounds, reducing the volume by 20%, just like the Air’s name, very thin and portable.

However, Apple does not compromise on performance just because it is thin and light.

The new model is equipped with the latest generation of its own M2 chip with a second-generation 5nm manufacturing process and 20 billion transistors, 25% more than the M1 chip. It supports up to 24GB of LPDDR5 unified memory with four high-performance cores and four high-performance cores.

The chip also supports a unified memory bandwidth of 100GB/s. The number of neural engines also reaches 1.58 billion, which is 40% more than M1, making it a major upgrade in almost all aspects.

In addition, on this generation, the MagSafe charging interface also gets back, up to 67W fast charging, while the whole machine is full with 18 hours of battery life.

Apple offers four colorways this time, namely silver, dark sky gray, gold, and dark blue.

Will you buy this M2 version of the MacBook Air?

At WWDC 2022 earlier this month, Apple announced the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with the M2 chip, and since the M2 MacBook Pro went on sale, a number of media outlets have been testing the M2 chip’s performance and real-world tasks. In the latest comparison, the performance of many of the chips in the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook are shown in comparison.

A chart by Macworld shares Geelbench 5 results for all the latest processors for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The publication mentions that different clock speeds for temperature control may result in different performances.

Multi-core” on the left represents CPU performance, while “Compute” on the right represents GPU performance, the higher the score, the better.

The A15 Bionic is better than the A14 Bionic in the previous iPad Air, but the performance gap between the two is small, which may be one of the reasons Apple chose the M1 when it upgraded the iPad Air in 2022. The A15 Bionic in this tablet has to be downclocked to maintain proper operating temperatures, so it’s not as fast as the A15 Bionic in the iPhone 13 Pro.

The M1 Pro and M1 Max chips are the faster chips in the MacBook Pro lineup, and Apple will release a more powerful variant of the M2 chip in the coming months that will further boost CPU and GPU performance.

June 27 – There have been many rumors in recent months about the design and specifications of Apple’s mixed reality (MR) headset. Bloomberg technology reporter Mark Gurman (Mark Gurman) recently pointed out that the device may be equipped with Apple’s flagship chip product, the M2 processor. Gurman expects that Apple’s latest version of the device, which is capable of providing augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences, will be equipped with an entry-level M2 chip with 16GB of RAM.

This differs from supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s previous prediction that Apple’s headset would be equipped with a processor with comparable performance to the M1 chip, supplemented by an additional low-end processor dedicated to processing data from the device’s sensors. Although Gurman did not mention the so-called auxiliary chip, there have been previous rumors that Apple will use a multi-chip design.

If Apple initially planned to use the M1 as the main processor for its MR headset, then replacing the latest version of its self-developed chip has more significance. Apple unveiled the new M2 chip at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) earlier this month and said that the M2 has an 18 percent faster CPU and 35 percent faster GPU compared to the previous M1 chip.

Other details about the device are starting to trickle out, with Gurman predicting 16GB of RAM, which could indicate a much more powerful performance than the Meta Quest 2. Meta’s VR headset has 6GB of RAM paired with a Snapdragon XR2 chip.

There are signs that Apple’s MR headset is getting closer to the rumored January 2023 release window. Apple board members reportedly got a chance to try out the device in May. The operating system the device will use, RealityOS, is already in Apple’s code and may appear in a trademark application filed by the company.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been outspoken about his excitement for AR. Earlier last week, he explained that the tech industry is still in the “very early” stages of technology.

Meanwhile, Cook confirmed the existence of the device almost for the first time in a media interview. He said, “Stay tuned in the mixed reality space, and you’ll see what we have to offer.”

Kuo also predicted the official debut date of Apple’s MR headset. He believes that Apple is likely to release its AR/VR device in January 2023, about six months from now. Of course, Apple has yet to officially announce a release date.

Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned that Apple’s MR headset could reshape the industry in a whole new way. So far, VR headsets have been able to produce digital images. However, Apple’s device may be able to overlay augmented objects and entities over real-world objects. Thus, the transparent design and more use cases could make this device a hit, boosting demand for AR-related games and entertainment solutions.

Apple’s MR headset may be one of the company’s most complex products. It involves many Apple suppliers, who must provide different components. With this in mind, if the device is a huge success, it will have a positive impact on Apple’s value and boost the company’s stock price significantly in the coming years. Because Apple has a more loyal fan base, the company doesn’t need to follow Metaverse standards and it can create its own entertainment and gaming solution areas based on MR.

Ming-Chi Kuo expects that as Apple releases its MR headset, other companies in the VR space will try to replicate its design and features, which could lead to “the next phase of rapid growth in the headset hardware industry and benefit the related services and content ecosystem. A similar situation occurred with the launch of the iPhone X when all other companies started producing more advanced devices.
