The latest AMD Ryzen 7040 series laptops are equipped with a dedicated AI engine based on Xilinx IP, named “Ryzen AI”, which can accelerate the operation of machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow. However, currently this Ryzen AI only supports Microsoft Windows systems. But that could change if there’s enough customer demand.

As early as June, AMD released some Ryzen AI demo code on GitHub, some of which are open source, but they are only available for Windows, and AMD has not released any Ryzen AI Linux drivers.

Someone then opened a pull request on GitHub about Linux support, but the issue was closed three days later with no resolution or Linux support plan communicated.

But today the Linux request was reopened by an AMD employee, with the reasoning being that (Linux) customers can express their needs: “Reopen the issue so that customers can log their Linux requests.”

In another request for Linux support, it was also suggested to give the Linux support thread a like (+1) if interested in seeing Ryzen AI support for Linux: “Please add a “+1” comment to #2 to support Linux.”

It is noted that Ryzen AI is currently only available in the Ryzen 7040 mobile series, but it is foreseeable that more Xilinx IP will appear in their future processors. Given the increasing number of AI workloads, and the fact that Intel has mainlined its open-source Meteor Lake VPU/NPU support in Linux 6.3, and even its next-gen NPUs have support for Arrow Lake, hopefully AMD will start enabling Ryzen AI for Linux.

A vulnerability called Looney Tunables was recently exposed, with the tracking number CVE-2023-4911, and mainstream Linux distributions including Debian 12/13, Ubuntu 22.04/23.04 and Fedora 37/38 have been affected.

This vulnerability exists in the GNU C library dynamic loader. A local attacker can use this vulnerability to create a buffer overflow and gain root privileges.

An attacker can use the GLIBC_TUNABLES environment variable triggered by the ld. so the dynamic loader executes arbitrary code with root privileges when installing files with SUID permissions.

Qualys disclosed the vulnerability on Tuesday, and several security researchers have released proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit code for certain system configurations.

Independent security researcher Peter Geissler (blast) released PoC code earlier today and confirmed that it is possible to attack Linux distributions.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty material has been officially released in recent days, according to the oil pipe main Maximum Fury’s test, the game in the AMD platform hardware under the emergence of a strange phenomenon, Linux under the frame rate than Win11 under 31% higher.

He used a Razor 5 5600-based platform with a B550 motherboard, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, and a Radeon RX 5700 XT graphics card. the CPU, RAM, and GPU were overclocked, the CPU and GPU were bucked, and the game was set to the 1080p Ultra High preset.

Using Cyberpunk 2077’s built-in benchmarks, the game was able to achieve an average frame rate of 63.72 FPS under Nobara OS, a modification of Fedora Linux. Under the same settings on Windows 11, the frame rate was only 48.55 FPS.

The reason for this discrepancy is unclear, the operating system used by Maximum Fury is a modified version of Fedora called the Nobara project. The distribution is intended to be a more user-friendly alternative to Fedora and comes with a variety of applications and driver support that the regular version lacks. This difference may also be related to the DX12 to Vulkan conversion.

Codenamed “Faye” LMDE 6 distribution based on Debian 12 Bookworm, released today the Beta version of the mirror download address.

The changelog, direct ISO download address: here and seed address.

The LMDE 6 release locks the root account by default to improve security. Therefore, users who need to access the recovery console or wish to log in as root need to use the sudo passwd root command to reset the root account password.

LMDE 6 is essentially the same as Linux Mint 21.2, including Cinnamon 5.8, touchpad gesture support, resizable Mint menus, a redesigned software manager, support for HEIF and AVIF images, and more.

The changes that LMDE 6 inherits from Linux Mint 21.2 also include a feature called Styles, which improves on the Cinnamon desktop by allowing more customization of themes and accent colors.

One of the main differences between Linux Mint and LMDE is longevity. The major Linux Mint releases have been supported for five years, while LMDE has only been supported for two years, so if you’re focused on a production environment, the main Linux Mint release may be a better fit, while if you’re more of a “fresh” user, LMDE is a good choice.

According to Manjaro Linux’s official blog news, Manjaro Linux 23.0 has been officially released, codenamed “Uranos”, This version uses Linux 6.5 kernel.

Manjaro Linux is a “fast, user-friendly, desktop-oriented, Arch Linux-based” distribution, and some of its notable features include an intuitive installer, automated hardware detection, a stable rolling release model, and support for installing multiple kernels, Some of the notable features include an intuitive installer, automatic hardware detection, a stable rolling release model, support for installing multiple kernels, special bash scripts for managing graphics cards, and a high degree of desktop configurability.

The desktop environment for the Manjaro Linux 23.0 distribution has now been updated to GNOME 44, KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS, and Xfce 4.18, with highlights of GNOME 44 including:

The GNOME file selector dialog has always been available only in list view, which is great when users want to select a file based on its name, but not so great when selecting a file based on its thumbnail. For this reason, GNOME users have been repeatedly asking for a grid view to be added to the file selector for many years.

As for KDE Plasma 5.27 LTS, it’s official:

This release includes a window tiling system, sleeker application themes, cleaner and more usable tools, and widgets that give users more control over their machines.

KDE designers have been working hard to reduce the number of pages in the Plasma System Settings utility and move smaller options along with other settings. This is the case with the animated configuration at application startup, which is now located on the cursor page. In addition, the "Highlight changed settings" button has been moved to the hamburger menu for a cleaner look.

On the Xfce 4.18 front, it’s official:

The new file highlighting feature in the Thunar file manager (accessed from the File Properties dialog) allows users to set a custom color background and custom foreground text color, which is an effective way to draw attention to specific files in a directory filled with similar-looking MIME types. On the topic of finding files, Thunar includes recursive searching.

The ecological improvement of the LoongArch architecture of Loongson has been relatively rapid recently. The software and hardware such as open source network boot firmware iPXE, QQ Linux version, and Moore threads have officially announced that they support LoongArch architecture.

As for Debian, the RISC-V Chinese community official Weibo previously announced that the Debian community has officially accepted riscv64 as the official support architecture, and currently, Debian is beginning to support the Loongson LoongArch architecture, and DebianPorts has now added support for the Loongson LoongArch architecture, which means All Debian Ports archive mirrors and their infrastructure contain the LoongArch architecture.

LoongArch is now the latest target of the Debian Ports archive mirrors. The initial Debian LoongArch bootstrap contains about 200 packages, and the developers are currently working on the associated self-hosted software. After a certain stage of work, Debian plans to start running Debian package builds on Loongson-hosted LoongArch CPU hardware.

Debian is one of the oldest GNU/Linux distributions and the basis for many other Linux-based operating systems, including Ubuntu, Kali, MX, and Raspberry Pi OS, among others. This operating system focuses on stability and does not pursue fancy new features, so the release of new versions often takes a long time.

The Linux distribution Debian 12.1 was released in late July this year. This version mainly fixes multiple security issues such as system user creation. It is still essentially a “minor repair” of Debian 12, but the Linux kernel has been upgraded from version 5.10 to version 6.1 LTS (with updated drivers, support for new hardware, and long-term support until at least December 2026).

The dust of the Red Hat RHEL incident has settled. A few days ago, Red Hat executive Christian Schaller said that they are recruiting full-time developers to enhance the Linux bootloader experience for Fedora and RHEL.

GRUB and the Linux boot loader generally don’t get a lot of attention and are more of a “just use it” kind of thing, with most Linux distributions preferring to hide the GRUB menu.

And Red Hat may be brewing some new ideas to improve the industry’s attitude towards the GRUB menu, so it chose to recruit full-time developers to improve the Linux boot loader experience.

According to foreign technology media phoronix report, the upcoming Linux 6.6 kernel version, will completely clean up wireless USB and UWB legacy code.

The report claims that the Linux kernel abandoned wireless USB and Ultra Wideband (UWB) code as early as 2019 due to a lack of maintenance staff and the popularity of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and that the wireless USB code hasn’t been updated in 10 consecutive years.

In the Linux 5.7 kernel update released in 2020, a large amount of WUSB and UWB code has been removed, and after 3 years, this legacy code will be completely cleaned up.

The Linux 6.6 kernel will remove more than 20,000 lines of WUSB/UWB-related code and add another 500 lines.

Wireless USB is used for short-range wireless USB technology, capable of reaching 480 Mbit / s at a range of 3 meters and 110 Mbit / s at a range of 10 meters.

Wireless USB is now obsolete and consumers prefer to use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
