LG Display announced that the Starbucks new store installed transparent OLED, located in South Korea Starbucks The Lishui Tushan DT store, large “transparent OLED table” consists of 12 55-inch transparent OLED, 8 meters long.

The transparent OLED table is placed in the center of the first floor of the store, and when a drink glass is placed on the table, the sensors react and create a wave effect around the glass.

“The Yeosu Gusan DT Store is one of the “THE Stores” launched by Starbucks Korea under the concept of “Selling Culture, Not Coffee,” in line with the strategy of making the store itself a famous one. The store has already received over 20,000 visitors in just 10 days after its opening, with an average of 2,000 visitors per day on weekdays.

Transparent OLED, which is currently being mass-produced by LG Display, is the only technology in the world that maximizes the benefits of OLED, namely that pixels emit light on their own.

It generates less heat than existing LEDs, making it suitable for indoor use, and can be installed in a variety of spaces such as windows, walls, and floors by using special tempered glass that can safely withstand the load.

Following the existing 55-inch transparent OLED, LG Display plans to expand the lineup to 77 inches and 30 inches in the future.

According to the Korean media The Elec reports, LG Display recently for Apple is developing a new OLED panel called “RDE”, is expected to be equipped in Apple’s future iPad product line.

LG Display is planning to start supplying Apple with new RDE panels next year, which are expected to be equipped with Apple’s OLED iPad Pro models to be released next year, according to a report.

LG Display is using the “RD” series of materials for automotive OLEDs and OLEDs for IT products, and there are also reports that the company is working on “RDG” panels, which are expected to be equipped on Apple’s OLED MacBook devices to be released in 2027. OLED MacBook devices released by Apple in 2027.

Note: LG Display is currently mass production of OLED and the future supply to Apple’s iPad and other IT products with OLED, are used to stack two light-emitting layers of two-layer tandem structure. The OLEDs Apple currently uses in its iPhone are a single-layer product with only one light-emitting layer.

Two-layer tandem OLEDs have two light-emitting layers, so they can produce the same brightness with less power than the single-layer approach, and are expected to improve product efficiency and lifetime.

Apple’s first OLED iPad is scheduled for release next year in 11-inch and 13-inch models. The panels are made by two companies: LG Display and Samsung Display.

In addition, he also said that LG Display has been in mass production of less than 20 inches of automotive OLED, but at the end of this year will be the world’s first mass production of more than 30 inches of Automotive OLED.

He predicted that LG Display will capture more than 60 of the OLED and more than 40% of the LTPS LCD share of the global vehicle display panel market in 2026. Based on sales, LG Display’s share of the global vehicle display market, excluding low-end amorphous silicon (a-Si) LCDs, will be more than 50% by 2026.

According to the 2022 automotive OLED screen market report recently released by market research organization Omdia and the current year’s market forecast data, the 2022 automotive OLED screen market share distribution is as follows:

According to Korean media The Elec, LG Display has recently purchased 14 Micro LED patents through the transfer of technology patents to prepare for next-generation screens such as the Apple Watch Ultra.

It was previously reported that market research firm Trend Force said in July this year that Apple is developing an Apple Watch Ultra smartwatch with a next-generation micro LED display, but due to manufacturing problems, the device’s launch has been delayed again, and it may not be available until the first quarter of 2026 at the earliest.

In order to reduce its dependence on rival Samsung and strengthen its control over the supply of key components, Apple is actively investing in the mass production of next-generation displays.

Apple uses its mature supply chain to help promote the landing of micro LED panels. Suppliers such as Osram (ams-Osram) cooperate to develop micro LED components, LG provides substrates, and TSMC provides wafer chips.

LG Display has acquired 14 micro LED technologies through key technology transfers and other methods, so as to have greater influence in Apple’s process of improving the supply chain.

According to Businesskorea, LG Display announced that it is investing in the sixth-generation OLED panel as planned, and will continue to invest in the sixth-generation OLED before the first half of 2024.

In addition, the investment in the eighth-generation OLED has not been finalized, and LG Display emphasized that the company will make investment decisions after carefully examining the possibility of technological advancement, the degree of technological advancement, and whether the technology can improve the company’s profits.

It is noticed that LG Display expects that the investment in 2024 will be lower than this year. “Because of the characteristics of the display industry, we need to order materials for investment in advance, and the investment is made over a long period of time. Therefore, it is not necessary to flexibly manage large sums of money to adjust the investment amount according to the company’s situation,” an LG executive said. Easy. This year, we are investing in the mid-to-high range of our existing guidance, while additionally working on cost-efficiency.”

“We haven’t finalized our investment volume and business plan for 2024,” the executive added. “However, we have reviewed ongoing investments and other plans. We now believe that next year’s investment volume will be less than this year’s.”

Samsung executives attended the SID Review event held in the Yeoksam-dong business district in Seoul, South Korea yesterday, reviewed the difficulties and problems encountered in developing foldable devices, and revealed that Apple is currently working with Samsung Display and LG Display to jointly develop 20-inch foldable devices.

Baek Seung-in, executive director of Samsung Display, explained the technical difficulties encountered by current foldable devices at yesterday’s event:

 foldable crack

 foldable crease

 stylus problem

 folding torque

 compressive stress

 screen distortion

Baek Seung-in said that since the launch of the first generation of foldable mobile phones in 2019, the crease problem has always been at the forefront of development . The content is as follows: “We have worked hard for many years. Although we have improved the crease, we still cannot completely make it disappear.”

Baek Seung-in revealed at the event that he is currently working with LG Display to develop a foldable 20-inch tablet and notebook hybrid device for Apple, but he said it will take longer to prepare.

Ross Young said in February that Apple is developing a 20.5-inch foldable laptop that could be released as soon as 2025.

He said at the time: “The current information I have learned is that Apple may launch a 20.5-inch foldable notebook in 2025, but I did not know that Apple will launch a foldable iPad in 2024. Perhaps this news is a good PR for the hinge company.”

At a seminar held in Seoul, South Korea on Wednesday, Choong Hoon Yi, CEO of analyst firm UBI Research, said LG Display will supply 8th-generation OLED panels in 2026, still winning Apple’s panel orders.

Yi said Samsung Display is currently the only display panel maker that has invested in 8th-generation OLED production; LG Display and BOE have yet to follow suit.

Yi said that the main reason for LG Display is that the existing LCD production line has encountered obstacles in switching to OLED production lines, which has delayed the launch of the 8th generation OLED.

It was previously reported that Samsung Display said in April this year that it is expected to start mass production of the 8th-generation OLED panels in 2-3 years, and it is estimated that it will not be until 2025 at the latest.

According to TheElec, LG Display is planning to develop hybrid OLED panels for automotive customers. In addition, LG Display and Samsung Display are also developing hybrid OLED panels for Apple, which will be used for the iPad in the future.

According to the report, this new hybrid OLED panel will use both glass substrate and thin-film encapsulation (TFE), which were used for rigid OLED panels and flexible OLED panels in the past. In addition, the hybrid OLED panel will use a polyimide substrate instead of glass, so it is also cheaper to manufacture.

LG Display’s first customer for the new hybrid OLED panels is likely to be European automakers, sources said. So far, the South Korean display panel maker has only supplied polyimide OLED panels to its automotive customers.

LG Display showed off its hybrid OLED panel technology, Advanced Thin OLED, during CES this year, and the glass substrate is said to be 20 percent thinner than the competition.
