According to Korean media ZDNet Korea, BOE took the lead in becoming the screen supplier for Apple’s iPhone SE 4, and Samsung Display withdrew from negotiations due to price issues.

Based on existing information, iPhone SE 4 is expected to be released in 2025, using the same size 6.1-inch OLED display as the iPhone 13/14 standard version, with shipments of up to 15 million units.

Referring to previous reports, there are three main companies competing for the screen supply license for Apple’s iPhone SE 4, namely BOE, Samsung Display and Tianma.

According to ZDNet Korea, Samsung Display gave up supply negotiations in the middle of this month due to price reasons, mainly because Apple’s price was only $25 (currently about 181 RMB).

Samsung’s previous offer was US$30, which, although lower than the two Chinese manufacturers, was still far from Apple’s expectations.

Sources said that Samsung Display was not very interested in supplying iPhone SE 4 screens from the beginning due to price differences. On the other hand, Apple also hopes to reduce the iPhone supply chain’s dependence on Samsung Display.

Another competitor, Tianma, has clear intentions to enter the iPhone SE 4 supply chain, but its product quality has not yet met Apple’s requirements.

According to MacRumors, the media recently received detailed information about the battery currently being tested for the upcoming fourth-generation iPhone SE, which confirms previous findings related to the device.

The iPhone SE 4 has a device identifier of D59 and is expected to use the exact same battery as the standard iPhone 14. Partially assembled prototypes of the new phone are already equipped with a lithium-ion battery model A2863, which Apple has used in the iPhone 14 in the past. Internal design documents also confirm the change.

Compared to the current iPhone SE 3, the capacity of the iPhone SE 4 battery itself will be increased:

 iPhone SE 3: 2018 mAh

 iPhone 14 (A2863): 3279 mAh

The A2863 battery has an increased capacity of 1,250 mAh compared to the battery used in the third-generation iPhone SE, which should extend the battery life of the new phone.

Apple is said to have developed a new battery with stronger heat dissipation capabilities for the iPhone 16 Pro, while the fourth-generation iPhone SE will continue to use existing parts to reduce costs. Developing new parts for the iPhone SE 4 would incur additional R&D costs for Apple, so using existing batteries would help keep the device affordable relative to other iPhone models.

In terms of other related upgrades, the fourth-generation iPhone SE will adopt a new design based on the iPhone 14 and will be equipped with an Action button and a USB-C interface.

The information provided here is before trial production. Although the iPhone SE 4 prototype uses A2863 batteries, Apple’s plans may change as the device is still far away from launch.

It’s been a long time since Apple unveiled its next budget iPhone SE, but plenty of rumors are still emerging, providing the industry with the latest updates on the successor. It is also reported that Apple will use an OLED screen on the iPhone SE 4, but it may lack ProMotion technology.

Detailed renders of iPhone SE 4 based on rumors / Image source: AppleTrack and Shea

Thanks to the collaboration of AppleTrack and Shea, we have renders of the iPhone SE 4, which is based on several rumors. First, Apple is said to be increasing the display on its new lower-priced products, from the iPhone SE 3’s 4.7-inch panel to the iPhone SE 4’s 6.1-inch OLED screen. Unfortunately, since Apple expects this model to target a lower price, we suspect it won’t have ProMotion technology, but it’s still expected to share some of the iPhone 14’s aesthetics.

Unlike the iPhone 14, the iPhone SE 4 is said to be equipped with a USB-C port and a rear 48-megapixel camera. According to the renderings, this iPhone will continue to use a notch design, which will be Apple’s only future model to adopt this design, but it is not yet known whether it will support Face ID. One of the biggest changes is the Action button that debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max this year.

The iPhone SE 4 is said to feature an Action button, which suggests the iPhone SE 4 might not appear before 2024, but there are other reasons the iPhone SE 4 launch could be delayed, and that’s the high price of Qualcomm’s 5G modems. Using Qualcomm’s 5G baseband chips will impact iPhone SE 4 profitability as Apple renews its licensing agreement with the San Diego chip company and Apple’s own 5G modem development continues to face problems.

According to foreign technology media MacRumors, Apple iPhone SE 4 has undergone major changes in terms of appearance design, hardware specifications, etc.

iPhone SE 4

Appearance is the same as iPhone 14

Apple’s iPhone SE 4 is internally codenamed “Ghost” and its appearance is basically the same as the iPhone 14. It will even retain the iPhone 14 test parameters in internal testing.

Introducing action buttons and USB-C port

Two major changes are expected in terms of appearance: the introduction of action buttons and a USB-C port. Apple abandoned the silent paddles on the iPhone 15 Pro and instead used operation buttons, allowing users to change operation options based on their preferences.

Another change for the iPhone SE 4 is the use of a USB-C port to comply with upcoming EU regulations. Sources indicate that Apple has begun to widely use E85 connectors, also known as USB-C ports.

Aside from the two obvious changes mentioned above, the iPhone SE 4 looks basically the same as the iPhone 14.

48MP camera

There is only one camera on the back of the iPhone SE 4, and the position of the flash is similar to that of the previous generation. Apple has developed and designed at least 5 designs for the camera bump, which can be roughly divided into 2 categories:

There is a rectangular camera island containing cameras and flashes

 There's just a camera bump.

Preliminary information suggests that the iPhone SE 4 may feature a 48-megapixel rear camera, which could be a significant upgrade compared to the current model.

Disable the Home button and enable Face ID

The iPhone SE 4 may also use the same OLED panel as the iPhone 14. The device will not have a Touch ID Home button, but will use Face ID as a biometric method.

Apple has repeatedly mentioned “Pearl”, which is Apple’s internal code name for Face ID and related hardware, and is associated with the iPhone SE 4.

Unlikely to be equipped with self-developed 5G modem

Apple is also developing an in-house 5G modem, codenamed “Sinope,” and is using the iPhone SE 4 to test the new hardware.

Current information suggests that the new modem is being tested on the iPhone SE 4 and iPhone 15 Pro Max derivatives called “D84S.”

Initially, the new 5G modem was intended to debut alongside the iPhone 16 series, with it available across the range. According to our sources, this may no longer be the case.

Additionally, Qualcomm recently issued a press release stating that the company will provide smartphone modems to Apple by 2026.

Apple is unlikely to test a self-developed 5G modem on the iPhone SE 4. If it were specifically tested, it would not require redesigning the camera or introducing operation buttons.

Note: Apple iPhone SE 4 is currently in the early stages of development and may be adjusted midway due to various reasons, which may differ from the final retail version.

After conducting “multiple conversations” with multiple fruit chain companies, Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Tom O’Malley ) concluded that Apple is unlikely to release the fourth-generation iPhone SE in 2024.

Analysts said that if Apple decided not to launch a new iPhone SE until after 2024, it could indicate that the company’s rumored self-developed 5G modem is not yet ready, which would benefit Qualcomm.

Apple has reportedly been working on its own 5G modem since 2018, and in 2019 acquired the majority of Intel’s smartphone modem business.

In April of this year, Ming-Chi Kuo said that mass production of Apple basebands will start as early as 2025, which means that even the iPhone 16 series phones launched later next year will continue to use Qualcomm basebands.

Ming-Chi Kuo has previously claimed that the design of the next-generation iPhone SE will be similar to the standard iPhone 14 model released last year, suggesting that the device will feature a 6.1-inch OLED display and Face ID capabilities.

The current iPhone SE, released in March 2022, is equipped with a 4.7-inch LCD screen, supports Touch ID, 5G, is also equipped with a 12-megapixel rear camera and an A15 Bionic chip, and starts at $429 in the United States.

According to DigiTimes, several OSAT vendors, including ASE Technology and Amkor Technology, are vying for the business of packaging 5G modem chips for Apple’s iPhone SE 4.

The report that the two companies mentioned in the report have experience in packaging 5G communication modules for Qualcomm. It is unclear whether Apple’s self-made 5G chip performance can be comparable to Qualcomm’s chip. In the foreseeable future, Apple will increase its own research efforts to reduce production costs.

Qualcomm CEO Ammon recently said at MWC 2023 that Apple may equip its own 5G modem chip in the iPhone 16 series, and the industry expects TSMC to eat 3nm foundry orders.

Previously, supply chain vendors said Apple’s in-house 5G modem chip, codenamed Ibiza, will use TSMC’s 3nm process, and the supporting RF IC will use TSMC’s 7nm process, which is expected to be introduced into Apple’s iPhone 16 series in 2024.

In a tweet shared with Super Followers today, display analyst Ross Young said that Apple has not yet finalized the display size for its planned 2024 iPhone SE 4 and is considering a number of decisions related to display size and display materials.

Apple is reportedly considering 6.1-inch OLED displays from two suppliers, as well as 5.7 to 6.1-inch LCD screens from two suppliers. Given this information, it is unclear whether Apple will use a 5.7-inch display or a 6.1-inch display, and whether the display will use OLED technology or LCD technology.

The OLED display will be more expensive, and current iPhone SE models use LCD displays with thick bezels and Touch ID buttons. Apple’s flagship iPhone line has had an OLED display since the iPhone X. It’s possible that the price of OLED panels has dropped. It’s possible that the price of OLED panels has dropped enough for Apple to use them in the low-cost iPhone SE.

However, whether it’s a 5.7-inch display or a 6.1-inch display, Ross Young believes that Apple’s iPhone SE 4 will have a full-screen design with bangs, but it’s unclear whether Apple will introduce Face ID or stick with Touch ID, about which rumors vary.

As previously reported by tipster Jon Prosser said that Apple’s iPhone SE 4 will feature an almost identical design to the iPhone XR, and brought related renders to show.

Jon Prosser says that the Apple iPhone SE 4 will get the same design as the 2018 iPhone XR. This change makes sense given that the initial iPhone SE design was based on the 2013 iPhone 5s, while the iPhone SE 2/3 design was based on the 2017 iPhone 8.

According to the reports, Apple has started working on its fourth generation of the iPhone SE smartphone. The device will formally launch as an iPhone SE 4 in the market. Rumours and leaks regarding the devices are already up on the internet and one of them claims that the upcoming iPhone SE is set to have a complete design overhaul.

Apple to update the design of its upcoming iPhone SE 4

The outdated front fascia occupied by Touch ID on the iPhone SE may see a significant overhaul. The iPhone SE 4 might have a larger display if this is meant to favour a new full-screen design. A larger 6.1-inch display, replacing the earlier 4.7-inch panel with its hefty top and chin bezels, will most likely result from the redesign.

iPhone SE 4

In Prosser’s concept, the iPhone SE 4 resembles the iPhone XR, which was introduced in October 2018. The four-year-old design included a single main camera shooter tucked away in the top left corner of the rear of the iPhone, a curved aluminium side rail, and flowing front and back glass panels. The older iPhone XR physical frame of the iPhone SE 4 is expected to house fresh internals.

The next iPhone SE 4 is probably going to have a notched face. By integrating the biometric authentication mechanism into the side-mounted power/lock button, Apple is also rumoured to keep the Touch ID technology. Although the iPhone SE 4’s internal hardware is currently unknown, if past patterns are to be believed, Apple will equip the iPhone SE 4 with one of their top-tier most recent processors.

According to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young, the fourth-generation iPhone SE will feature a 6.1-inch LCD display and continue to have the bangs at the top of the display that has been present since the iPhone X. Young said he has revised his expectations for the fourth-generation iPhone SE. In October 2021, Young, who has a very good track record of providing insight into Apple’s plans, said the company plans to release a new iPhone SE model with a 5.7 to 6.1-inch “punch-out” LCD display in 2024.

In retrospect, this information may suggest that Apple is exploring the inclusion of an island in the fourth-generation iPhone SE, a change that seems reasonable given that if the device is released in 2024, the island will be present on all four major iPhone models at the time.

Young’s revised predictions say that the device will feature a 6.1-inch display with fringes. it is not yet known whether the iPhone SE’s fringes will include a TrueDepth camera array like other iPhone models. Some rumors suggest that the iPhone SE will not get Face ID, instead sticking with Touch ID like previous models to keep costs down. The move to an all-screen design will remove space for a capacitive Touch ID Home button on the bottom bezel of the device. Reports have also predicted that Apple is planning to add a Touch ID side button to the iPhone SE, just like the iPad Air and iPad mini.

The size of the bangs on the fourth-generation iPhone SE is unclear, but if it doesn’t include the components for Face ID, it seems it could be made narrower than the fringes on the iPhone XR, since that device has Touch ID.

Leaker Jon Prosser believes that the iPhone SE will move to a similar design to the iPhone XR, which will involve the removal of the Home button. This change is likely, as Apple’s ‘SE’ products have so far used the design of older devices.

The iPhone XR has a 6.1-inch LCD display, and Ming-Chi Kuo has said that Apple is working on an iPhone SE with this display size, so Jan’s latest claims seem to confirm these other reports and help cement a clearer image of the next-generation iPhone SE design.
