Intel now announced that its XeSS technology has been applied to more than 50 games, such as “Diablo IV”, “Cyberpunk 2077”, “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”, “Assassin’s Creed: Heroes” Temple”, “Control”, etc., this technology has become a strong competitor of NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR.

It is worth mentioning that there are already more than 300 games and applications supporting Nvidia DLSS and DLSS 2, and more than 30 games and applications supporting DLSS3, while AMD is rapidly gaining support from game developers, with more than 200 games currently supporting FSR, more than 100 games support the updated FSR2 technology.

It is noticed that Intel also demonstrated the performance of the latest Arc A750. The Intel Arc A750 is said to be designed for modern gaming and can play a variety of titles at 1440p high-definition.

In addition, XeSS does more than just increase the frame rate, it can also enable the Intel Arc A380 to bring more than 60 FPS ray tracing experience.

Intel today released a live demo of the effect of opening XeSS on Gotham Knights.

Intel said that XeSS super sampling technology uses artificial intelligence-enhanced upgrades to improve performance and image fidelity, and has been optimized for sharp dazzling graphics products, to be able to take advantage of XMX AI hardware acceleration technology.

The game supports Nvidia ray tracing reflection effect and DLSS 2, and also supports Intel’s XeSS supersampling technology.

Game description.

Batman is dead and a new and very expansive criminal organization has swept through the streets of Gotham. Now, the responsibility of guarding Gotham, bringing hope to the citizens, reorganizing the police, and deterring criminals fall on the shoulders of the Bat Family: Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin. Solve the mystery of the darkest chapter in the city’s history, face off with the most vicious villains and defeat them. You must morph into the new “Dark Knight” and do all you can to prevent the neighborhood from falling into chaos.

After announcing support for Unreal Engine in March, Intel has finally integrated XeSS into Unreal Engine 4 and 5, making it easier for developers to integrate XeSS into Unreal Engine projects without having to manually add the XeSS SDK.

In addition, XeSS integration enables full compatibility with all four of Unreal Engine’s upgrade models from Nvidia, AMD and Intel, including DLSS, NIS, FSR and XeSS, and it also supports Unreal Engine’s proprietary upgrade solutions.

Xe Super Sampling (XeSS) is Intel’s time-domain resolution upgrade product, which is similar to AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology. From a technical perspective, XeSS is a bit more similar to DLSS in that it also uses AI to implement image upgrades, but unlike DLSS, XeSS has different modes of operation on different GPU types.

In short, Intel uses a “high level” mode on its own GPU platform, based on the Intel XMX AI core, which is only present in the Arc Alchemist GPU; there is a “low level” mode to cover the DP4a instruction set, mainly for other types of GPUs, including those from Nvidia and AMD.

The XeSS plugin is currently available for versions 4.26, 4.27 and 5.0. This plugin is currently only available on Github, but we expect it to hit the Unreal Engine market soon, just like AMD FSR and Nvidia DLSS.

Intel’s plug-in will replace Unreal Engine’s temporary anti-aliasing (TAA) with XeSS, integrated at the beginning of the post-processing phase, according to the presentation. In this way, XeSS will be used to upgrade only the necessary parts of the rendering pipeline while retaining other parts of the game — such as the HUD — rendered at native resolution for better image quality.

In order to counter NVIDIA DLSS and AMD FSR’s super sampling technology, Intel will launch XeSS technology (Xe Super Sampling) next month. Recently, Ryan Shrout, Intel’s GPU business marketing director, released an article introducing XeSS on the Intel ARC official website.

According to the introduction, XeSS is Intel’s supersampling solution designed to make better use of the GPU. specifically, XeSS will render the game at a lower resolution, then use AI technology to boost the image to a higher resolution with results similar to or better than native rendering, and finally, XeSS will output the high-resolution graphics to the screen.

Intel notes that XeSS has four preset modes for gamers to choose from: Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, and Performance. According to UL benchmarking results, Performance mode has a frame rate 2.5x that of native quality, Balanced mode has a frame rate of 2.1x that of native quality, the Quality mode has a frame rate of 1.8x that of native quality, and Ultra Quality mode has a frame rate 1.5x that of native quality.

Meanwhile, Intel showed off the results of a real-world demo. Tomb Raider: Shadow of the Tomb Raider was run on two PCs with Arc A770 graphics cards at the same time at 1440p Max settings with ray tracing enabled, one with balanced mode XeSS enabled and the other without XeSS enabled. The results show that the PC with XeSS in balanced mode was able to maintain a frame rate of 60-80 FPS, while the PC without XeSS struggled to reach 60 fps and remained at around 40 fps.

Intel also announced XeSS-enabled games, including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Tomb Raider: Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Neverwinter Nights, Hitman 3, Death Stranding, and over 20 other games.

XeSS technology uses the XMX engine within the Xe GPU to achieve matrix acceleration to maximize the efficiency of rendering efficiency, and the traditional TAA contrast, XeSS technology can bring higher frame rates and more smooth game graphics.
