British luxury carmaker Rolls-Royce previously unveiled its first all-electric Spectre, with a range of more than 500 kilometers and an estimated range of $327,750 to $458,000 (currently about RMB 2.357 to 3.293 million).

However, Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös recently told the media that the company is considering a full shift to hydrogen fuel cells in the future, provided the technology is mature enough for large-scale commercialization, given Rolls-Royce’s brand positioning and customer expectations.

When asked by AutoCar, Toston said that although companies such as Toyota have developed hydrogen-burning engines, and Rolls-Royce’s parent company was experimenting with hydrogen combustion technology in the BMW 7 Series at the beginning of the 21st century, Rolls-Royce would not consider using hydrogen-burning engines: “This technology is not the most efficient way to use hydrogen, and if hydrogen is to be used in the future, it will must be through the fuel cell. A fuel cell is no different to a normal battery, it’s just a different way of getting energy.”

Toston said bluntly, “When we think the right time comes, Rolls-Royce will certainly pursue more advanced technology and perhaps we will move away from normal batteries and move fully into the fuel cell sector.”

However, Toston also acknowledged that the difficulty of obtaining hydrogen in the average home is a current technical hurdle. In contrast, most Spectre users already own more than one electric car, and they are able to charge easily at the office or at home via a charging post, making existing pure electric cars more advantageous to them.

For this reason, Rolls-Royce is “closely monitoring” the development of hydrogen refueling infrastructure to assess the possibility of hydrogen fuel cells.

The Rolls-Royce Spectre was officially unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show in April this year and is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2023 with a domestic pre-pricing of RMB 5.75 million.

According to foreign media reports, Hyundai Motor Group, which is investing heavily in electric vehicles, has hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles in addition to the commonly charged electric vehicles in the passenger car segment, and their hydrogen fuel cell heavy truck XCIENT has been exported to Europe twice, and the hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles have sold more than 7,000 units in the first 8 months of this year.

And to the latest reports from foreign media, in addition to selling hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to the public, they will also sell related parts to the public, and the fuel cell system will be exported to a manufacturer in Germany.

Hyundai Motor Group announced on its official website on Monday, local time, that the fuel cell system will be supplied to a German company for the production of hydrogen-fueled commercial trucks.

According to the announcement on Hyundai Motor Group’s website, its fuel cell system brand HTWO signed a cooperation agreement on Monday with Enginius, a waste removal vehicle and truck manufacturer of the European Faun Group, to supply fuel cell systems to Enginius for the mass production of hydrogen fuel cell commercial trucks.

A Hyundai Motor Group executive also revealed that the supply of fuel cell systems to Enginius, which will have an initial fleet size of more than 1,100 hydrogen fuel cell trucks, is the first time they have supplied other manufacturers in volume and will represent a major expansion of Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell systems business.

According to foreign media reports, in the wave of development of new energy vehicles, in addition to hybrid cars and pure electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, which generate electricity through the chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen to drive vehicles, are also a director of development, Toyota and Hyundai Motor and other manufacturers have been researching in this field for many years, and the public is also conducting related research and development.

In terms of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, Hyundai has been researching and developing for many years, and has launched a variety of them, and their hydrogen fuel cell heavy truck XCIENT, which will be launched in 2020, has been exported to Europe.

And from the news disclosed by the Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Sunday local time, it seems that Hyundai Motor Group’s hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are not only exported, but also a considerable part of them are sold to local consumers.

According to the data released by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, as of the end of October, of the 1.515 million new energy vehicles registered in Korea, 27,000 were hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, accounting for 1.78% of the registered new energy vehicles.

As with electric vehicles, the number of hydrogen fuel cell vehicle registrations in Korea is expected to be higher as the technology progresses and the supporting facilities are improved, and the proportion of new energy vehicles and vehicles will be higher then.

Recently, according to media reports, the trial production of FAW’s first brand-new Hongqi H5 fuel cell vehicle was completed at the R&D Institute. According to reports, the new Hongqi H5 fuel cell vehicle is equipped with the second-generation fuel cell engine independently developed by the powertrain department. Compared with the previous generation, it is 40% higher than the previous generation, with a rated power of 65kW and a rapid cold start of -30℃, reaching the domestic leading level.

The energy of this power system uses hydrogen fuel, which does not burn oil and does not charge.

It is worth noting that the current Hongqi H5 already has a version equipped with hydrogen fuel cells, and its battery life has reached 520km, and the battery life of the new generation model is expected to be improved.

The new fuel and hybrid version of the H5 has been pre-sold, starting at 170,000, and will be officially launched on July 26. The new car adopts the latest design style of the family.

In addition, Hongqi will also launch a pure electric version of the H5, which is expected to adopt a front face similar to that of the E-HS9 at the same time, and retain the design of the straight waterfall air intake grille to create the aura that a luxury car should have.

In addition, the pure electric H5 will be equipped with a 111kWh power battery. This battery is FAW’s first self-developed all-in-one CTP power battery assembly. It has three characteristics of high safety, high energy, and 20-minute ultra-fast charging. Its range, but not expected to be low.

The trial production of the fuel cell vehicle this time will further enrich the product lineup of Hongqi H5 and enhance the overall competitiveness.
