According to foreign media 9to5Google reports, Google is currently researching the next generation of the Pixel folding model, the model codenamed “Comet”.

The foreign media decompiled the latest version of the Google Pixel Buds application and found a reference to the device codenamed “Comet”, the foreign media believe that this device is the successor of the Pixel Fold, but “there may also be a new vertical folding phone. It could also be a new vertically folding phone.”

The Pixel Buds app’s code, which includes the Comet codename, is also referred to as a “folding model” by the app, which further suggests that Comet is a folding phone. Google’s only current folding screen phone, the Pixel Fold, was released in May of this year, and Google may not be able to put more information on its successor in the near future.

▲ Google Pixel Fold

However, according to the media, the Comet codename is not in line with Google’s typical naming scheme for Pixel phones. For example, the Pixel Fold was originally codenamed “Passport”, but was later renamed “Felix” as it was updated to run on the same Tensor G2 chip as the Pixel 7 series.

Similarly, the Pixel 9 / Pro series phones are expected to use reptile-related codenames such as “Komodo” and “Caiman”. The Pixel 8 / Pro line of phones, which will be released tonight, are codenamed after dog breeds – “Shiba” for the Pixel 8 and “Husky” for the Pixel 8 Pro. “.

Google launched Android 14 Beta 5.3 for Pixel devices today, which is the fourth update in the past month. This version is available to users participating in the beta program and contains multiple bug fixes.

Beta 5, 5.1, and 5.2 are also bug-focused updates, indicating that Google is preparing to roll out the stable version of Android 14.

The latest beta 5.3 has firmware version number UPB5.230623.009 for all eligible Pixel devices, and although the September patch has already been released, this version still uses the August 2023 Android security patch.

This version has a lot of bug fixes, and according to the official release notes, Android 14 Beta 5.3 fixes an issue related to “CallStyle” notifications that sometimes cause the app to crash. Google also fixed some issues that caused calls or carrier service to be interrupted, in addition to fixing a system issue where the phone used an “inefficient path” when imposing CPU limits on apps running in the background. Other issues affecting system stability and performance have also been resolved.

Android 14 Beta 5.3 also fixes some issues on the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. One of the issues causes the taskbar to sometimes disappear when the user interacts with it. Google also fixed an issue with live wallpapers that caused animations to stutter when launching the app. Finally, the update also fixes a bug that affected the first-generation Google Fold phones, where the clock animation on the lock screen would flicker.

It is noticed that Google has been fixing vulnerabilities in Android 14 for the past month, indicating that a stable version update is close at hand, but there are recent rumors that the company will delay the update until October.

Google launched the Pixel Fold folding screen phone in May this year, which supports spatial audio through wired and wireless headphones for a more immersive audio experience.

And now, Google Pixel Fold can also support spatial audio through built-in speakers. According to a post by former XDA-Developers editor-in-chief Mishaal Rahman, a user shared a screenshot showing that the Pixel Fold’s built-in speakers already support spatial audio.

Google Pixel Fold users can experience the built-in spatial audio by going to the Settings > Sounds and Vibration > Spatial Audio menu and turning on the button next to the Phone Speaker option.

It is found that this option is also listed in the phone help on Google’s official website, and it seems that it is indeed officially supported.

Note that Google’s spatial audio support for built-in speakers is unique to Pixel Fold. After all, only the folding screen can change the relative position of the speakers through the hinge, while Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro can only be wired and Experience spatial audio with wireless headphones.

The Google Pixel Fold will be officially launched on June 27, but a British user received the foldable phone 4 days early.

The British user posted on the Reddit community that his order was still showing as waiting to be shipped and that no logistics information was available or text messages sent to him beforehand, but he received the phone package unexpectedly on Friday.

The British user shared his first experience, which is as follows:

The phone can be unfolded 180 degrees horizontally, without the problems previously reported. Visible creases can be seen, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold.

I'm not too concerned about durability, my feeling is that it is very thin, moderate weight, and the performance is not bad, with no noticeable lag in split-screen multitasking.

Google is rolling out an update to its Recorder app that offers a UI better suited for larger screens before it goes on sale next month with the Google Pixel Tablet tablet and Pixel Fold phone, according to 9to5 Google.

Google Recorder’s previous tablet UI was just a landscape mode for phones. On the home screen, there is now a two column layout for saving recordings, and the large FAB is now located in the bottom right corner instead of being centralized in a dedicated column for that button.

When viewing recordings, Google displays waveforms and transcripts side-by-side instead of having to choose one over the other, similar to the web version of recorder.google.com layout, with a redesigned Material You; the playback controls have been moved to the bottom corner and are now side-by-side instead of stacked, and there are large buttons for editing, with similar optimizations in the bottom left corner.

Finally, the recording UI has switched to the same two-column layout for waveform and text recording, as well as buttons, and the time has been moved to the bottom left corner.

Google Recorder version 4.2.20230427.530752515 (as opposed to 4.2.20230419.x) is now available through the Play Store. Since the Pixel Tablet and Fold are not yet available, users can test the Google Recorder update by increasing the DPI to 600+ in the developer options.

Google has updated more than 50 first-party apps ahead of the upcoming Recorder app, with apps like Gmail (navigation bar), Google Calendar and Weather still waiting to get updates.

At the I / O 2023 developer conference, Google introduced the Pixel Fold “book-style” folding screen phone, but sources say Google will also launch a flip-type folding screen phone similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4.

The source @itnyang tweeted that Google is internally discussing the flip version of the Pixel Flip folding screen phone to the market, but the specific name has not been determined; this model is expected to be launched in 2024, equipped with the Tensor G3 chip, is expected to use Samsung’s improved 4nm mass production process, the price is expected to be lower than the Pixel Fold of $ 1799 ( Note: The current price is about 12,629 CNY).

It’s unclear what size sub-screen will be used for the Pixel Flip folding screen, but trends show other OEMs are developing flip-folding phones with larger sub-screens.
