Google introduced the Gemini large language model for the Pixel 8 Pro phone in the Feature Drop released in December last year; in a press release issued today, Google announced that in the next Pixel Feature Drop, it will Introducing the Gemini Nano model for Pixel 8 phones.

Google said that after the introduction of the Gemini Nano model, the Pixel 8 phone has initially added two new AI functions. One is the introduction of the Summarize function in the Recorder application, which can summarize recorded conversations, interviews, Demonstrations, etc.

The second AI feature is the introduction of Magic Compose in Messages, which can automatically generate stylized suggested responses based on the context of user messages. Through this function, users can not only generate various new and reply contents, but also request related contents to be rewritten in different styles.

Note: Google’s Pixel Feature Drops are released quarterly, and the company just released an update in March, which means Pixel 8 users will have to wait a while to take advantage of these features.

The Pixel 8/Pro series will become Google’s first phone that can be connected to a wired external display. After updating to the Android 14 QPR3 Beta version system, it can be connected and used without any other operations.

Before the launch of Pixel 8/Pro, tipster Kamila Wojciechowska said that the phone supports USB DisplayPort Alt mode, allowing video output through the USB-C interface.

Android news digger Mishaal Rahman recently discovered that after installing the Android 14 QPR3 Beta update, users can plug a USB-C to USB-C or HDMI video cable into the phone, plug the other end into a compatible monitor, and then the phone will pop up a dialog box , asking if you want to mirror your phone’s screen to an external monitor.

▲ Test pictures posted by Mishaal Rahman on the Android Authority website, the same below

Once you click Connect, everything displayed on your phone will be copied to your monitor or TV. If you want a more desktop-like experience, you can enable developer settings on your phone and toggle the “Force Desktop Mode” option to get a desktop-like OS experience.

Rahman noted that the existing desktop mode is very rudimentary, but Google is apparently working on a more powerful version that is expected to launch with Android 15 this fall and cannot be ruled out as one of the selling points of the Pixel 9 series.

Unfortunately, video output is not available on other Pixel devices, and Google has disabled DisplayPort Alt Mode at the hardware level, with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro being the first phones to offer hardware support.

Google and Samsung announced that they will launch a new Circle to Search function for Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24 series phones on January 31 this year.

Circle to Search captures what’s currently on your screen (including videos) and lets you circle specific parts of it to focus your Google Lens searches.

On Samsung devices, three-button navigation is still the default, and you can launch Circle to Search by long-pressing the Home button.

This feature allows users to search for any image, video or text on the screen by circling, highlighting, doodling or clicking without taking a screenshot and quickly obtain the information they need.

Google and iFixit updated the Pixel Accessories Mall during the Christmas holiday, adding a batch of new original accessories for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones.

Attached is the main replacement information:

The most expensive of these is replacing the rear camera assembly, which costs $200 on the Pixel 8 Pro. For reference, iFixit is offering a Galaxy S23 Ultra camera assembly (four cameras) for $142, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max rear camera assembly is $150.

The “Camera and Screw Kit” replacement parts for the iPhone 15 Pro Max cost $219.64 through Apple’s official self-repair program, but if the old parts are returned to Apple, the price can be reduced after using a $30.40 credit coupon $189.24.

The Pixel 8 lacks a camera, eliminating the need for a complicated periscope zoom lens, but its camera component is also worth $200.

The Pixel 8’s components are separate: $143 for the main camera and $63 for the ultra-wide angle.

This update also introduces various small adhesive strips and heat dissipation strips, but does not provide a replacement motherboard, which may be the first thing to be damaged when the device is flooded.

It was reported in October last year that Google not only promised to provide seven years of Android major version upgrade services for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, but also stated that it would prepare spare parts for these two phones for seven years.

Soniya Jobanputra, director of product management at Google, said in an interview with Android Authority, “Parts are available for seven years, which is part of our commitment. We need to make our parts available so that we can Hardware remains viable for the long term.”

iGoogle’s Pixel 6 series of phones were notorious for signal problems. Google has made great improvements on the Pixel 7 series of phones, but it is reported that this phone also has weak signal problems. The latest Pixel 8 series phones appear to be affected by a similar issue, as well as a more serious problem that causes the phone’s battery to drain quickly when using a mobile network instead of Wi-Fi.

On Reddit and the XDA forums, many users are reporting poor battery life on the standard Pixel 8 phones. Affected users believe that the Exynos 5300 modem on the Tensor G3 chip is the culprit, as most of them are experiencing unusual battery drain when using mobile data. Some people claim that the phone needs a charge after about five hours of use when using a mobile network, while it lasts about eight hours on Wi-Fi.

Some users are also experiencing poor signal and spotty mobile data connections on both Pixel 8 phones, with some claiming signal issues on the new Pixel phones are just as bad as on the Pixel 6 series.

It is unclear whether these problems can be solved through software updates. Google has not yet responded to this.

Google recently issued a statement to 9to5Google stating that in order to prevent the leakage of relevant hardware information, it deliberately blocked mainstream benchmarking applications on the pre-released Google Pixel 8 and Google Pixel 8 Pro phones.

The statement reads as follows:

As in previous years, we blocked related benchmarking apps during the pre-release phase of Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones to avoid leaking benchmarks and device specifications.

The restrictions have been lifted after the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones went on sale. If the reviewer wants to test the relevant performance in advance, he can install and run it through sideloading.

Google took extraordinary measures for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, preventing reviewers from downloading popular benchmarking tools, including Geekbench and 3D Mark, directly through its Play Store. In addition, the company is extending this block to all new users of Pixel 8 phones after their launch in an attempt to suppress the spread of the benchmark results.

Google emphasizes that the Tensor G3 chip is designed with efficiency and artificial intelligence in mind, rather than purely pursuing performance, which shows that the company is very aware of the chip’s relative shortcomings in performance. While some reviewers were blocked from installing the test software through the Google Play Store, some reviewers were still able to bypass this restriction through “sideloading.” Therefore, the results of the Tensor G3 chip on Geekbench, 3DMark and other testing software were exposed, and these results showed that its performance was very average.

According to a report by foreign technology media dealntech, many users reported that Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones have heating problems. They will notice heating problems during regular use at room temperature. In addition, after using Instagram for a period of time, You will feel obviously hot.

The report clearly stated that not all users reported heating problems, mainly in areas where the room temperature was higher than 25 degrees Celsius. They reported that obvious heating occurred during daily use.

Note: Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones do not use passive cooling such as VC heat sinks, but use thicker copper sheets and graphite sheets to try to control the heat of these phones.

Google has also severely limited the performance of the Google Tensor G3. The combination of graphite and copper and Performance Lock ensure the phone won’t run too hot for most people’s basic use.

The specific cause of the fever cannot be confirmed at present. Google may curb the heating problem through software updates in the future, like Apple’s iPhone.

According to information tested by a netizen, the temperature of Pixel 8 can reach 46 degrees Celsius after 20 minutes of 3DMark Wildlife Extreme Stress test, which is obviously not ideal.

Recently, some users bought the Pixel 8 series of cell phones on Reddit to reflect that their phone’s bootloader is not locked (unlocked bootloader). Unlocking the bootloader is necessary for users who like to install custom firmware or want to gain root access to the phone, but most Android phones lock the bootloader by default. Unlocking the bootloader usually voids the phone’s warranty, and it also makes personal data on the phone easier for attackers to steal.

The number of Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro phones with this problem is not large. One Reddit user said he contacted Google customer service, who advised him to return the phone and get a new one. The user wrote in the post, “I received my Pixel 8 Pro today. as soon as I turned it on, it showed me a warning to unlock the bootloader. I proceeded with the setup but contacted Google. Google advised me to return the device and ask for a replacement.”

Another Reddit user also posted: “Received my new Pixel 8 phone from Google Fi yesterday, and as soon as I opened it I got the same bootloader warning message as the owner. I may have enjoyed flashing my phone when I was younger, but it was too much hassle/risk for a brand-new phone. I contacted Fi customer service and they agreed to give me a replacement. I also ordered one for my wife and she had no problems with hers. I’m curious how many phones have slipped through quality control. This is the first time I’ve encountered a Nexus / Pixel phone with this problem.”

Users who received a Pixel 8 series phone with an unlocked bootloader will receive the following message when they turn on the phone for the first time, “The bootloader is unlocked and software integrity cannot be guaranteed. Any data stored on the device may be accessible to an attacker. Please do not store any sensitive data on the device.”

More than a decade ago, users might have been lucky if they found themselves with a phone with an unlocked bootloader, but the number of people swiping their phones has dropped dramatically today. And with most phone users storing personal data on their phones, security seems to be more important than further customizing one’s phone.

According to foreign media 9toGoogle, Google is improving the RAW photo function of Pixel 8/Pro phones, mainly optimizing the display of related photos in the album and supporting the synchronization of RAW photos to the cloud.

▲ Picture source: foreign media 9toGoogle

Foreign media said that after using a Pixel 8/Pro phone to take RAW photos, the album will be marked with “RAW” in the upper right corner of the relevant photo thumbnail so that users can easily identify the type of photo.

After users click to open these RAW images, in addition to freely adjusting the photo parameters, they can also export the photos to JPEG format with one click for easy sharing.

▲ Picture source: foreign media 9toGoogle

In addition, RAW photos taken by users will be automatically uploaded to the “Google Photos” cloud. However, it is found that due to the large size of RAW photos, directly uploading RAW photos may affect the user’s data traffic usage, but Google currently does not provide this “Only upload JPEG to the cloud” option, so we still need to wait for further adjustments from Google.
