Canalys today announced the statistics of global tablet shipments in the third quarter. It is learned from the data disclosed by Canalys that global tablet shipments in the third quarter were 33 million units, year-on-year. It fell 7% and increased 8% month-on-month.

Global tablet shipments reached 33 million units in the third quarter of 2023, down 7% year-on-year but up 8% quarter-on-quarter, reflecting signs of recovery in the tablet market ahead of the important holiday season.

New entrants are also performing strongly in this field. For example, Xiaomi's tablet shipments have an annual growth rate of 119.7%, and Huawei's tablet shipments have an annual growth rate of 28.2%.

Himani Mukka, research manager at Canalys, said, “As inventory levels stabilize, tablet shipments are gradually increasing month-on-month, which is a good sign for the upcoming holiday season, and continued discounts and new product launches are expected to drive the market. Return to the growth track and achieve year-on-year growth.”

In view of the changing needs of users around productivity and content consumption, high-end devices with large screens have become a new consumer trend. Beyond this, tablet manufacturers must prioritize incorporating generative AI into their devices to maintain a competitive advantage.

Leading players like Apple and Samsung have said they will incorporate AI experiences into their hardware portfolios. As PCs and smartphones have made significant strides in AI, manufacturers must ensure their tablets keep pace to provide a consistent user experience and maintain interoperability across device ecosystems.

Canalys said that smartphone manufacturers are flexing their muscles in the tablet market, especially Chinese manufacturers that are committed to product innovation and high cost performance:

Apple continued to hold the No. 1 spot, shipping 12.5 million iPads in the quarter and accounting for 38% of the market.

Samsung ranked second, shipping 6.2 million units, down 6%, while Lenovo ranked third, shipping 2.6 million units.

Huawei and Xiaomi ranked fourth and fifth respectively, with Xiaomi entering the top five for the first time and becoming the manufacturer with the highest growth rate.

Following market research agencies IDC and TechInsights, another agency, Canalys, also announced the global tablet PC situation in the first quarter of 2023.

The report shows that global tablet shipments in the first quarter of 2023 will be 31.7 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 17.7%, which is the lowest shipment since the outbreak of the epidemic in the first quarter of 2020.

Attached is relevant data as follows:

Apple shipped 12.4 million units in the quarter, down 17% year-over-year.

Samsung shipped 6.72 million units in the quarter, down 14.4% year-on-year.

Amazon shipped 2.5 million units in the quarter, down 29.9% year-over-year.

Lenovo shipped 1.89 million units in the quarter, down 37% year-over-year.

Huawei shipped 1.61 million units in the quarter, down 4.3% year-on-year.

Himani Mukka, research manager at Canalys, said:

After the Christmas shopping season, consumer demand for tablets can be expected, but shipments are still lower than expected.

In addition, there is more structural adjustment as a large number of demand drivers during the pandemic have largely disappeared. As a result, tablet suppliers and retailers are prioritizing high inventory levels as they recalibrate their expectations for milder, more predictable demand.

IDC: Slight decline in tablet sales in 2022, Chromebooks fall off a cliff https://www.techgoing.com/idc-slight-decline-in-tablet-sales-in-2022-chromebooks-fall-off-a-cliff/ Sun, 05 Feb 2023 03:31:59 +0000 https://www.techgoing.com/?p=69502 IDC’s full-year 2022 and fourth-quarter 2022 market reports on tablets and Chromebooks are out, and the results are not good. IDC’s full-year 2022 and fourth-quarter 2022 market reports on tablets and Chromebooks are out, and the results are not good. Overall, the tablet market shrank by 3.3 percent for the full year 2022, but saw flat growth of 0.3 percent in the fourth quarter of the same year. However, after a wildly strong 180.5% growth in 2021, the Chromebook market is bound to normalize, with its shipments recording a 48% decline for the full year of 2022 and a 24.3% decrease in the fourth quarter of 2022.

As always, the key drivers of the market in 2022 are Apple and Samsung. Apple remains the leader with a 49.2 percent market share in the fourth quarter and 38 percent for the full of 2022, followed by Samsung with 16.8 percent and 18.6 percent, respectively. In 2022, Apple is the only original equipment manufacturer to achieve a modest 7 percent growth in 2022, and in the fourth quarter, the company recorded an impressive 28.8 percent year-over-year growth, while Samsung’s sales grew by a modest 7.1% over the same period.

Amazon, Huawei and Lenovo all recorded negative growth in both periods, and market analysts believe that going forward, vendors should appeal to mainstream consumers for long-term gains. That’s why some new players, such as OPPO and Xiaomi, are launching a handful of mid-range tablets in 2022. This is especially true during the economic downturn when users will think twice before opting for a higher-spec tablet.

As for the Chromebook market, its performance in 2022 is bad compared to 2021, with its shipments recording a 48% decline for the whole of 2022 and a 24.3% decrease in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Unfortunately, analysts predict that any progress Chromebooks make outside of the education space will fade throughout 2023, as demand for such devices isn’t very popular outside of the education space.
