GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card was recently exposed to a number of burn-in incidents with the 16Pin power cable, and now one user has sued Nvidia.

The user, recently filed a class action lawsuit against NVIDIA over a burned 16Pin power cable. The lawsuit alleges that Genova is suing NVIDIA for unjust enrichment, breach of warranty, fraud and violations of New York’s general business law.

The lawsuit, filed Nov. 11 in California federal court, claims that NVIDIA “marketed the RTX 4090 with defective and dangerous power cord plugs and sockets that rendered consumers’ cards inoperable and posed a serious electrical and fire hazard to each and every purchaser.” The user appears to be filing the class action lawsuit on behalf of itself and all purchasers of the GeForce RTX 4090.

The plaintiff reportedly purchased the GeForce RTX 4090 from Best Buy for $1,599.99. He was reportedly “experienced in installing computer components such as graphics cards” and installed the card according to best practices. After installation, the user later discovered that his 16-pin power cable had a burned and melted problem.

The lawsuit states, “Plaintiff and the Class members have been hit with a double whammy: a high price ($1,599 MSRP) for a dangerous product that should not have been sold in its current condition.”

According to foreign media statistics, there are at least 26 GeForce RTX 4090 users have reported encountering this problem of 16Pin power cable burn, and some have also damaged the socket on the graphics card.

NVIDIA is still investigating the issue of 16Pin power cable burn-in, and it recently said that it does not have any further details to share with the public, but the good news is that NVIDIA and its AIB partners have promised to provide quick returns for affected users.

@Pugetsystems combined seven NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs at the same time and benchmarked them through OctaBench, which is a little crazy.

Using a 64-core AMD Threadripper PRO 5995 WX processor, ASUS Pro WX WRX80E-SAGE WIFI motherboard, 128GB DDR4-3200 memory, 2 TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD, and four Super Flower LEADEX power supplies (totaling 6400W), the entire system’s power The cost is about $30,000.

It is worth mentioning that because 7 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards require a total of 28 8pin connectors, so he can only use four power supplies at the same time.

To make the whole system run smoothly, instead of using PCIe 4×16 mode, he used a few adapter cables to make it run in PCIe Gen 3.0 x16 mode.

A card is rated at 450W, so seven NVIDIA Geforce RTX 4090 graphics cards can eventually reach 3150W, but considering that the rest of the system also needs power, 6400W of power is definitely enough.

From the final result, the power consumption of seven RTX 4090 graphics cards reached 2750W, and the idle power consumption of seven cards was almost as high as the power of one RTX 4090.

In terms of performance, OctaneBench (with RTX enabled) shows a clear growth relationship. 7 cards can basically bring 4.56~6.9 times performance, which is more reasonable than the SLI performance loss in the “Quad Titan” era (and the consumption of this generation is more reasonable. Advanced graphics cards no longer support SLI).

In addition, some reviewers used 8 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs to run the OctaneBench test, and finally showed a linear growth performance of nearly 8 times, which also shows that RTX4090 can bring very good multi-card expansion capabilities.

So if you have similar work needs, the option to use multiple graphics cards may be a good choice.

Since the release of the GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card, NVIDIA has seen multiple reports of issues with the 12VHPWR 16-pin power connector. Power expert “JonnyGuru” from Corsair believes the problem is on the user side. JonnyGuru explained that users may not have fully inserted the 16-pin “12VHPWR” connector cable into the graphics card, which will cause problems with the connection itself, melting wires and overheating the connector.

As mentioned earlier, this theory is not new, but it is one of the ideas that has arisen in the tech world from content creators, experts, and media sources. This is also still a theory as there is no complete evidence to support this view. However, JonnyGuru did show us how he came to this conclusion through hardware and connectivity issues with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU.

The demo uses a Corsair HX1500i using three PCIe cables connected to NVIDIA’s 16-pin “12VHPWR” adapter. A thermistor was included in the test to monitor the temperature, and knots were tied around the wires to make sure the cable didn’t bend too hard.

To reproduce the problem, he set out to destroy the durability of the connectors, especially the joints soldered at the junctions. After that test, everything was still working, but the connector temperature was already up to 53°C.

Next, he looked at all known cases of melted and warped connections, looked at every published picture, and compared the undamaged connections to those in melting and overheating problems. Recognizing the similarities of all manufacturers, he came to a conclusion:

"Any 12VHPWR connector has the potential to burn out as these units can be difficult to fully plug in."

Most of the images with broken cables or connections are not fully connected to the GPU. He recommends that users with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards, who are concerned about the same thing happening to them, can use dielectric grease (about $4 on Amazon) for the power connector, a small amount can do a great job Help the connector plug into place.

Nvidia has not released any details or answers to the public since the incident began. It is understood that the company has made this issue a top priority. At the same time, officials shared a new notice from PCI-SIG that may suggest that a new revision of the 16-pin “12VHPWR” cable will be released by December 6, 2022. The latest review area shows that an ECR or Engineering Change Request has been made and will close by December 20, 2022.

AMD yesterday released the latest generation of Radeon RX 7900 XTX (7999 CNY) and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card (7399 CNY) flagship graphics cards, which will go on sale on December 13.

At the press conference, AMD released its own Radeon RX 7900 XTX test data.

According to @harukaze5719, who compiled AMD’s official benchmark data and compared it to the NVIDIA RTX 4090, the RX 7900 XTX achieved performance on par with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 in Cyberpunk 2077 and Metro Exodus at 4K. At the same time, it can reach 83 FPS and 60 FPS respectively in the two games, and the latter also has ray tracing mode turned on.

In Ubisoft’s masterpiece Watch Dogs: Legion, AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX’s 4K performance is also very close to the GeForce RTX 4090, which can reach 132 FPS, only 9 FPS lower than NVIDIA’s flagship card.

In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II in 4K, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX hit 306FPS, which is 6 FPS lower than the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090.

There are no charts for several other games because there is no official data comparison yet. According to AMD, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX also performs well in other games:

Resident Evil 8: Village (Ray Tracing): 138 FPS

Doom Eternal (Ray Tracing): 135 FPS

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla: 109 FPS

God of War: 98 FPS

Red Dead Redemption 2: 93 FPS

Of course, the Nvidia RTX 4090 is really strong, but the reason why this card can reach the starting price of 12,999 CNY is probably because of the AI professional performance and CUDA support that are difficult for ordinary gamers to use, rather than pure Game performance, so these two cards have their own suitable user groups, and cannot be generalized by the number of game frames alone.

The site Reddit reported the first case of NVIDIA’s 16-pin connector powering a GeForce RTX 4090 burning out and melting the plug. A player on Reddit with ID u/reggie_gakil posted a picture on the NVIDIA subreddit of a burnt-out 16-pin connector on a graphics card that powers his brand new GeForce RTX 4090 (custom model).

The pictures show that both the power adapter, which includes a 16-pin to 4×8-pin plug, and the power connector on the PCB end up in flames and melting.

Looking closely at the picture, it seems that the problem occurs around the main 12 pins under the top four extra pins. But the adapter was almost entirely burned and melted. The supplied cable confirms Nvidia’s official specs, and it has been reported before that bending the cable or applying too much pressure to the cable can cause abnormal temperatures that can eventually lead to issues like this one.

The user reported that while playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on his NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 PC, the graphics card suddenly caught fire, destroying the power connector. He also said that it could be a faulty cable and that it will be disposed of harmlessly, although we can’t figure out the cause of the problem until we have more information.

It was recently discovered that the NVIDIA 16-pin adapter cable for the GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card is simply too thick to manage in a smaller PC case, and it really hits the side panels a lot. As a result, the user will have to bend the cable frequently to close the panel, but again this is not recommended as it may heat the cable and cause the adapter to burst and catch fire.
