Dutch company PAL-V recently opened a showroom dedicated to displaying flying cars in Munich, Germany, displaying the flying car PAL-V Liberty. DE regional sales manager Richard Crombach said that the showroom is now open to the public, marking a “major leap towards a new transportation era” and making future transportation more accessible to the public.

It is learned from the official website that the exhibition hall will provide a platform for potential buyers, investors and enthusiasts to see with their own eyes the craftsmanship and technology behind the PAL-V flying car.

The PAL-V Liberty adopts a three-wheel design and can transform into a rotorcraft when the propellers and tail rotors are released when taking off. It is reported that the entire transformation process of the car takes about 10 minutes. Its land driving speed can reach up to 160km/h, and its flight speed can reach 180km/h. In land driving mode, the maximum endurance is 1,315km, and in flight mode, the maximum endurance is 500km.

Alef Aeronautics, a California automaker, said that its all-electric flying car Model A has obtained a special airworthiness certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and will begin flight tests on the road.

According to public information, Alef Aeronautics is a start-up company that has received support from companies such as SpaceX. According to the company, this is the first time the company has received relevant certification, and the Model A has already started accepting reservations, with a starting price of $300,000.

“This brings us closer to providing a greener, faster way to commute, potentially saving individuals and businesses hours of time each week,” said Alef Aeronautics CEO Jim Dukhovny. “That’s one small step for the aircraft industry, one giant leap for the automotive industry. “

Alef Aeronautics said that since flying cars are new and the FAA is constantly adjusting regulatory factors, the special airworthiness certificate issued limits the places and destinations where Model A can fly.

The company’s goal is to produce the first flying car with both road driving and vertical takeoff capabilities. The Model A is designed to fit into existing urban driving and parking infrastructure.

It is reported that Model A can take off vertically or horizontally, and can carry up to two people. Estimated cruising range is 200 miles (approximately 321 kilometers), and flight range is 110 miles (approximately 177 kilometers).

In January of this year, Alef Aeronautics announced that in the last three months of 2022, about 440 people paid deposits. Consumers can choose to pay a $150 deposit to stand in line, or pay $1,500 to enjoy priority shipping.

In December 2022, Duhovny said in an interview that consumers are expected to see their cars flying in the sky by 2025.

Alef isn’t the only flying car or air taxi company to have made a major regulatory breakthrough in recent days. Shares of air taxi company Joby Aviation soared 44% on Wednesday after the company also received a special airworthiness certificate from the FAA.

As one of the products sandwiched between an aircraft and a car, flying cars have been a key topic of discussion in the aviation sector, and they are also increasingly sought after, one of the reasons being the increased efficiency of traveling by air in the face of increasingly congested urban traffic.

What’s more interesting is that Musk has also described the flying car as a helicopter with wheels, and does not believe it can occupy the sky. Among the tech giants, Musk has understood the Internet’s traffic password, and there are countless hot searches about Musk. Musk is not only very active on overseas social networks, but also called a “traffic maker” in China.

Google co-founder Larry Page’s flying car startup Kittyhawk announced on Wednesday, local time, that the company is winding down. In a LinkedIn post, the company wrote, “We are still working on the details of our next steps.”

Kittyhawk was founded in 2010 when Page recruited Sebastian Thrun, who had worked on self-driving cars and other experimental projects at Google, to build an electric vertical takeoff and landing plane. The company released a demo video of a flying car in 2017, and Thrun said he envisioned a time when people could hail flying cars through apps like Lyft or Uber.

Kittyhawk showed a model of a flying car called Flyer in 2018 that could hold a person and fly up to 20 miles. Shrun had told CNBC in an interview earlier that year that the models could be in the sky within five years. The company announced a strategic partnership with aircraft manufacturer Boeing the following year.

By 2020, however, Kittyhawk reportedly announced plans to shut down its Flyer program and shift its focus to its electric aircraft called the Heaviside.

But a company spokesperson told CNBC that today’s announcement will not affect the company’s relationship with Boeing.

“Kitty Hawk’s decision to cease operations will not change Boeing’s commitment to Wisk. We are proud to be a founding member of Wisk Aero and are excited to see the work they are doing to drive innovation and sustainability through the future of electric air travel. We do not anticipate that the Kitty Hawk announcement will affect Wisk’s operations or other activities in any way.”

With the continuous development of technology, flying cars have also moved from literature to real life. In addition to the conventional four-wheeled flying cars, there are also companies that choose to develop three-wheeled flying cars.

The world’s first flyable three-wheeled vehicle has received permission from the FAA to test-fly, METRO reported yesterday. According to the report, the three-wheeled flying car, which took 14 years to develop by Oregon-based Samson Sky, is worth £143,000 (about 1.154 million yuan) and is called Switchblade.

The Switchblade three-wheeled vehicle is reportedly 5.1 meters long and 1.8 meters wide, and can be parked in a regular parking space and driven on three tires. When users drive the car to the airport, the Switchblade three-wheeled car can deploy its wings and tail to become an airplane in less than three minutes.

Sam Bousfield, CEO and designer of Samson Sky, said the Switchblade three-wheeled vehicle is expected to take off at a travel speed of 88 miles per hour (about 141.62 kilometers per hour). In previous flight tests, the flying car could reach 98 miles per hour (about 157.72 kilometers per hour), which means it could complete its takeoff.

Bushell says 2,100 users have already reserved the Switchblade flying car, with reservations in 52 countries. Early bookers include NASA engineers, airline pilots, entrepreneurs and more.

At present, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has selected Mitsubishi Land as the project manager for the “flying car” project. In addition to Mitsubishi Jisho, the “flying car” project will include Japan Airlines, which will use its experience in aircraft navigation technology to provide airframe flight services, and Kanematsu, which has worked with Skyports, a British startup that develops and operates landing sites.

Japan Grown Up (CHODAI) borrowed a Chinese flying car for a sea experiment on July 29. In order to help local residents in Japan to transport between islands, the company implemented flight experiments with a two-seater model developed by Chinese startup EHang, with the consent of the Japan Coast Guard and the Aviation Bureau, among others.
