Microsoft recently released the Microsoft Edge 119 stable version update, which fixes many bugs in previous versions and improves many functions such as restoring split tabs when restarting the browser.

However, according to foreign technology media NeoWin, the new version of Microsoft Edge has adjusted the location of the option to switch on and off the sidebar in the settings. Previously, users only needed to visit edge://settings/sidebar to find “Always” in the first-level menu. Show Sidebar” option, which is now moved below Copilot.

Note: Edge users need to enable the “Show Copilot” option to turn on or off the sidebar. Turning off the “Show Copilot” option will remove the Copilot icon from the sidebar.

While this may be convenient for users who don’t use the Copilot feature, it removes the auto-hide sidebar option, making it difficult for Edge users to turn off the sidebar from settings.

According to the latest tweet posted by browser enthusiast @Leopeva64, Microsoft is improving the update mechanism of the Microsoft Edge browser and will follow the Win11 system and introduce the “Get Edge browser updates faster” option.

“Microsoft Edge will automatically update when the browser is idle. Your tabs will automatically be restored,” reads the text description.

This update mechanism will imitate the “Updates are available, install now” option in the Win11 system, allowing Edge users to experience relevant new functions/features earlier.

Microsoft released the Win11 Build 23493 preview update yesterday, the biggest highlight is the introduction of the Windows Copilot function.

Foreign technology media Windows Central released the latest blog post, complaining that the first version of Windows Copilot has very simple functions, and at present it is the Edge browser of the cover.

The media measured and upgraded the Win11 Build 23493 preview update, and a new Windows Copilot icon button appeared on the taskbar.

After the user clicks the button, a sidebar interface will pop up on the right side of the screen, displaying the familiar Bing Chat chat interface, and the user can ask questions or start related commands.

However, the media measured that although Windows Copilot is supported by Bing Chat, it has not actually been deeply integrated and is still floating on the surface.

Windows Copilot actually visits the Bing Chat website and answers user content by calling the Edge browser.

The Windows Copilot sidebar is not a native Windows interface, it’s just an Edge browser masquerading as a Windows sidebar.

This means that the Edge web browser needs to be running in the background whenever Windows Copilot is turned on. Essentially it’s a browser that users can’t use offline.

Even when connected to the Internet, Windows Copilot has very limited functionality, including searching online resources and some creative tasks, but the options shown at the Build conference such as configuring Windows settings are not implemented.

Microsoft launched full-size ads for the Edge browser when users used it to download Google Chrome in February this year. Now, Microsoft seems to be doing the same thing again, but with a new approach.

According to The Verge, when journalists in different parts of the U.S. and even outside the U.S. typed “Chrome” into the Edge browser, it instead generated answers that looked like the Bing Chat AI, but instead of Chrome, the content was an ad about Bing Search, with the headline “Bing: The Search Engine That’s More Than Just Search.”

Apparently, Microsoft has decided to advertise Bing through AI search answers when users use Edge to find information about “Chrome”, which is not a regular search result. When The Verge asked about the AI chat search results, Microsoft’s director of product marketing Jason Fischel gave an initial response, translated as follows:

"We often experiment with new features, user experiences and behaviors to test, learn and improve the customer experience. These tests are typically brief and not necessarily representative of what is ultimately or broadly available to customers."

After the story was published, Microsoft Jason Fischel sent back another response stating that Microsoft had removed the ad and that “the experience is no longer interstitial.”

While this particular interaction with Bing Search may have been turned off, it does suggest that Microsoft is continuing to experiment with more possible “advertising” methods to promote Bing Search.

Microsoft brought good news for users of the Edge browser at Build 2023, as the company announced a new design for the browser that includes the popular Mica material, rounded tabs, content containers, improved animations, and many other visual changes.

Microsoft said the updated design was inspired by user feedback and the company’s desire to create a beautiful, easy-to-use browsing experience. As a result, Microsoft Edge now features the Mica material on its toolbar, tab bar, sidebar and other parts.

In addition, the company has introduced rounded corners for tabs that are separate from the address bar, making the toolbar, address bar, and tab bar more clearly distinguishable from each other. Finally, the profile button has been placed in a new location — the top left corner — to give users easier access to controls and settings related to their profile.

New Edge browser is not just a visual change, Microsoft has also brought new features to the Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) powered by the Edge browser. PWAs released in the Microsoft Store will support the Payment Request API, allowing to query digital product details, view existing purchases, check purchase history and handle the payment process between the Microsoft Store and the user. In addition, Microsoft is making it easier for developers to optimize their progressive web apps to fit the Edge browser’s sidebar. According to the company, it only takes a few lines of code to get a PWA to work in Edge’s sidebar.

Microsoft’s Edge browser has recently lost to Apple’s Safari browser in the competition for the second largest browser, but this has not stopped Microsoft from continuing to add new features to the Edge browser. Microsoft is currently testing adding thumbnails to Edge’s Favorites page to make browsing bookmarks more fun.

Currently, users can only see a list on the “Favorites” page of the Edge browser, which lists all the web pages that the user has favorited. While the list view is more compact and can display more bookmarks, the thumbnail preview allows users to see a snapshot of the user’s favorite web pages. However, when the user switches to the thumbnail view, the user cannot see as many bookmarks as the list view.

As discovered by Twitter user Leopeva64-2, the Edge browser’s Favorites page offers some thumbnail options in the Canary version, including “Small Thumbnail View,” “Medium Thumbnail View,” and “Large Thumbnail View.” Thumbnail View”, users can choose according to their needs.

It is found that the thumbnail function of the Edge browser is similar to the “Visual view (Visual view)” function added by the Google Chrome browser last year. However, the latter can only be enabled through the flag at present, but in the Canary, the thumbnail view is not hidden in the version, although it is currently only available to a limited number of users, hopefully Microsoft will roll this feature out to more users in the coming days and months.

Microsoft recently released a blog post introducing some of the important features and functions introduced to the Microsoft Edge browser.

Editing web images:

If users want to edit a certain image, instead of downloading, saving it locally, and editing it on a PC or Mac device using software such as Photoshop, they can simply right-click on the image and perform operations such as cropping, adjusting light and color, and adding filters without leaving the window.

Users can save locally after editing, which reduces the need to switch from one application to another.

Drop feature

The Drop feature allows users to sync files and notes between the Edge browser on desktop and mobile. These files and notes can also be accessed directly through OneDrive.

The first feature is the ability to write notes in the Edge text box, and the contents of those notes are added to Notes.

Notes are displayed on the sidebar, similar to the way notes are displayed in messaging applications. The main difference here is that all notes are private and visible only to logged-in users.

The second feature is support for adding files by dragging and dropping, or you can add one or more files by selecting the plus button in the Drop interface and choosing from your local device.

New Bing Image Creator

The Bing Image Creator feature is based on DALL-E, another deep learning model from OpenAI, and can automatically generate images based on text content entered by the user. Google introduced support for Nvidia’s RTX Video Super Resolution technology in Chrome 110 stable version, and Microsoft recently announced the introduction of a similar technology for the Microsoft Edge browser.

Microsoft announced the introduction of Video Super Resolution (VSR) technology in the Microsoft Edge browser, based on Microsoft Research’s AI technology to enhance video quality.

Microsoft blog post that nearly one-third of Edge users play videos at 480P and below, using this technology to improve the viewing experience for users with low network bandwidth and poor video quality.

Microsoft says it is now open to 50% of Canary channel users, who can visit edge://flags/#edge-video-super-resolution in the address bar to enable the experimental flag to achieve the feature.

To enable video super-resolution technology on the Microsoft Edge browser, the following conditions need to be met.

  • Hardware needs to be in the Nvidia RTX 20/30/40 series or AMD RX5700-RX7800 series GPUs
  • Video resolution needs to be below 720P
  • Be AC powered
  • The video is greater than 192 pixels in height and width
  • The video is not protected by digital rights management technologies such as PlayReady or Widevine.

Microsoft has released Edge 111 browser for beta testers. The update enhances the browser’s security, adds new policies for IE mode and upcoming mouse gestures, and removes the flag that enables the partial Mica effect.

Here’s what’s new

New features:

  • Enhanced Safe Mode improvements. Enhanced Safe Mode now supports WebAssembly for MacOS x64 and Linux x64. more cross-platform (ARM64) support is expected in the future.
  • New policy for clearing IE mode data on browser exit. InternetExplorerModeClearDataOnExitEnabled policy controls whether browsing history is removed from Internet Explorer and Internet Explorer mode each time Microsoft Edge is closed. Users can also configure this setting in the “Clear browsing data from Internet Explorer” option in the Privacy, Search and Services menu of Settings (edge://settings/privacy).

Policy Updates:

  • InternetExplorerModeClearDataOnExitEnabled – Clear history for IE and IE mode every time you exit
  • MouseGestureEnabled – Mouse gestures are enabled
  • PrintPreviewStickySettings – Configure sticky print preview settings

Another notable change in the Microsoft Edge 111 Beta is the removal of the flag that enables the mica effect on the toolbar and tab bar. Microsoft did not explain why it decided to drop the improved visual effect. Perhaps it has to do with upcoming improvements to the browser changes with rounded corners, split screens (available in the stable version of Edge) and other features.

Users can download Microsoft Edge 111 Beta from the official Edge Insider website. version 111 of Edge will be released in stable form the week of March 9, 2023.
