Google introduced support for Nvidia’s RTX Video Super Resolution technology in Chrome 110 stable version, and Microsoft recently announced the introduction of a similar technology for the Microsoft Edge browser.
Microsoft announced the introduction of Video Super Resolution (VSR) technology in the Microsoft Edge browser, based on Microsoft Research’s AI technology to enhance video quality.
Microsoft blog post that nearly one-third of Edge users play videos at 480P and below, using this technology to improve the viewing experience for users with low network bandwidth and poor video quality.
Microsoft says it is now open to 50% of Canary channel users, who can visit edge://flags/#edge-video-super-resolution in the address bar to enable the experimental flag to achieve the feature.
To enable video super-resolution technology on the Microsoft Edge browser, the following conditions need to be met.
- Hardware needs to be in the Nvidia RTX 20/30/40 series or AMD RX5700-RX7800 series GPUs
- Video resolution needs to be below 720P
- Be AC powered
- The video is greater than 192 pixels in height and width
- The video is not protected by digital rights management technologies such as PlayReady or Widevine.
