Volkswagen Anhui’s first pre-production model rolled off the production line, marking a key step towards the full production of Volkswagen Anhui’s first new energy model in 2023.

Volkswagen also said earlier this month that its sub-brand’s electric SUV Tavascan was put into production at Volkswagen’s Anhui factory. The car is based on the MEB platform and will be sold to the European market from 2024 to compete with Tesla Model Y.

At the end of 2020, Volkswagen will increase its capital in JAC Volkswagen to 75%, and at the same time, the company will be renamed Volkswagen Anhui. The previous JAC Volkswagen has been transformed into a joint venture controlled by Volkswagen. Volkswagen Group stated that Volkswagen Anhui has the most suitable production capacity and technical strength, so it has become the best choice for exporting overseas.

Bitauto has now obtained the exterior photos of the Cupra Tavascan pure electric SUV. According to reports, this car is a product of the same level as the Volkswagen ID.5. It will be put into production at the Volkswagen Anhui MEB plant in China in the second half of 2023 and sold back to the European market.

In terms of appearance, judging from the leaked appearance of the Cupra Tavascan, it should be very close to or even the style of the mass-produced model. The body shape is round and dynamic, and the headlight structure is also highly recognizable. The platform of the VW ID.5 is comparable.

According to Bloomberg News, Volkswagen will follow the example of Tesla, BMW and other automakers in exporting electric vehicles from China to Europe, citing limited production capacity in its home market.

Volkswagen said on Friday that its Spanish brand Cupra will produce its first electric SUV, the Tavascan, at a joint venture plant in Anhui. This model is based on the same MEB platform as the ID.x family, and it will enter the European market in 2024. This is also the second model of Cupra based on the MEB platform.

“When drawing up the production plan, the Anhui plant was a plant with the right capacity and technology,” Volkswagen said in a statement, though it added that it currently had no plans to produce other export models in China.

Volkswagen is working on its five-year financial plan to decide which plants to build which new models by mid-century and how much to invest in those new plants/models.

It is worth mentioning that there are already several car companies selling Chinese-made models in Europe, such as Tesla Model 3 / Y, BMW iX3 and Renault’s Dacia Spring. PricewaterhouseCoopers recently forecast that automakers will import 800,000 vehicles into Europe from China.
