According to Bloomberg, Chinese car companies such as BYD are considering abandoning the U.S. market before facing more restrictive measures.

On August 16, 2022, the President of the United States signed the “Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)”, which aims to promote domestic electric vehicle manufacturing in the United States through tax incentives and financial support and exclude China from the U.S. electric vehicle supply chain. Its preference for U.S. automakers and supply chains has made it too expensive and inappropriate for BYD to operate in the U.S. passenger car market.

After the bill was signed, BYD Executive Vice President Li Ke once said that the IRA may slow down the penetration rate of electric vehicles in the United States. The IRA will prevent American consumers from purchasing the most “affordable” options, so the U.S. market is not within BYD’s current consideration. .

In recent years, Chinese car companies have successively established factories in Mexico and Brazil. The report pointed out that these car companies mainly target the smaller, profitable and easy-to-enter Latin American market, rather than the United States.

Zou Zhou, head of BYD Mexico, said in an interview that BYD is considering building a factory in Mexico. Overseas production is crucial and Mexico is an important market with huge potential, he said. BYD expects to select a site for the factory by the end of the year, which will have an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles.

It is noticed that BYD has successively launched Han, Tang, ATTO 3, Dolphin, Seal, Song PLUS DM-i and other passenger car products in the Mexican market, as well as some pure electric bus vehicle and chassis products.

BYD’s cash reserves increased eightfold from the end of 2019. BYD’s net profit from bicycles was negative before 2021. By the fourth quarter of last year, it could already make a net profit of 9,000 RMB for each vehicle sold.

Unlike BYD and other Chinese companies, after the release of the “Inflation Reduction Act”, South Korea wanted to unite with the European Union to oppose the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act and suppress American electric vehicles, but in the end they chose to compromise. Kia, a subsidiary of South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group, is expected to start operations this year Starting to produce electric vehicles in the United States to obtain partial electric vehicle tax credits.

BYD hopes to achieve further results in the Brazilian market, especially in the field of high-end cars and electric vehicles. To this end, BYD has invested a lot of money in media promotion.

According to reports, BYD will invest approximately 100 million reais in advertising in 2023, accounting for one-fifth of its total investment in establishing a dealer network. BYD Brazil chairman Alexandre Baldy said this number will continue to grow in 2024.

Public information shows that BYD’s Brazilian branch was established in 2014. In addition to selling zero-emission electric forklifts, vans, trucks and passenger cars in the Brazilian market, the company has three factories in production and is also responsible for two rail projects in El Salvador and São Paulo.

U.S. President Joe Biden announced on February 29 that he had instructed the U.S. Secretary of Commerce to investigate smart cars originating from China. Joe Biden pointed out in the statement that “China is determined to dominate the future of the automobile market, including the use of inappropriate To be fair, China is also preparing to flood U.S. roads with technologically advanced vehicles that could pose risks to national security.”

Joe Biden further explained that China’s smart cars can collect sensitive data about American citizens and infrastructure and send this data back to China, where the vehicles can be accessed remotely. Why should Chinese smart cars be allowed to operate in the United States without safeguards?

White House officials said it was too early to say what action the U.S. Commerce Secretary might take on cars, but they said the government has broad legal powers that could have a “huge impact.”

At present, the United States has restricted electric vehicles using Chinese batteries from receiving green car tax credits and imposed high tariffs on Chinese cars. At the same time, the United States is also considering modifying tariffs to target Chinese cars assembled in Mexico.

The Commerce Department will solicit comments over the next 60 days and will consider drafting a regulation after that time. It will also investigate U.S.-produced cars, such as where their software comes from.

Previously, He Yadong, spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce of China, responded to the United States’ restrictions on Chinese automobile imports through high tariffs. Chinese automobiles are widely popular around the world, not because of low-price dumping, but because of technological innovation and excellence formed in fierce market competition. quality. In recent years, the United States has set up numerous obstacles, including imposing tariffs, restricting participation in government procurement, and adopting discriminatory subsidy policies, which have seriously hindered Chinese automobiles from entering the U.S. market. In sharp contrast, China has always opened its door to global automobile companies. U.S. auto companies are fully enjoying the dividends of China’s large market. In fact, the sales of American brand cars in China far exceed the sales of Chinese brand cars in the United States.

According to Nikkei, multiple local dealers in Japan revealed that BYD aims to sell 30,000 electric vehicles per year in Japan by 2025. The company plans to establish a sales network of 100 dealers in the same year, with each dealer selling an average of 300 cars per year.

This is an ambitious plan because the Japanese market has always been a difficult fortress for foreign brands to conquer. Japanese consumers have deep trust and preference for local car brands. Japan is the fourth largest car market in the world, with local carmakers holding more than 90% of the market share.

In addition, Japan’s electric vehicle market is also not very prosperous. Currently, hybrid vehicles and light and small vehicles are the main demand models. In November this year, Japan’s electric vehicle sales fell 9% year-on-year to only 6,429 units.

BYD officially entered the Japanese passenger car market in January this year and launched three pure electric vehicles, namely SEAL, DOLPHIN, and ATTO 3. Among them, ATTO 3 is priced at 4.4 million yen (tax included), which is approximately 222,700 RMB.

In order to open up the Japanese market, BYD has also taken a series of measures, including establishing its own dealer network and reaching agency agreements with well-known local dealers and auto parts sellers. The company currently has about 50 sales points in various regions of Japan, including Temporary store.

It is noticed that BYD’s overseas business has maintained a strong growth momentum. In overseas markets, BYD has sold more than 30,000 vehicles for two consecutive months. In the first 11 months of this year, BYD’s overseas sales reached a cumulative total of 206,700 vehicles, more than three times that of last year.
