At the SNEC 16th (2023) International Solar Photovoltaic and Smart Energy Conference and Exhibition, BYD launched the first energy storage system with integrated blade battery, “BYD Cube”. It inherits the core advantages of high safety and long life of the blade battery, which can solve the pain points of safety, cost, life and efficiency faced by the industry.

According to the introduction, BYD Tesseract is equipped with the blade battery that has passed the “pinprick test” and adopts CTS (cell-to-system integration) technology. “No module, no PACK, directly integrated into the system, can reduce the number of parts by about 36%, improve the space utilization of about 98%, increase the structural strength of about 30%.” At the same time, it can be applied to industrial and commercial energy storage, power plant-level energy storage and other application scenarios through flexible combinations.

BYD Magic T28, which has been demonstrated before, is a liquid-cooled, single-door, aisle-less, highly integrated grid-level energy storage product that is compatible with global standards and is the first product in China to pass UL9540A system-level accreditation. It has been widely used in many energy storage projects around the world.

SNE data shows that BYD’s global energy storage battery shipments in 2022 will be 14GWh, up 211% year-on-year, with a global share of 11.5%, ranking second in global energy storage battery shipments. At present, BYD has launched blade batteries and CTB and other technologies to establish a global leading technological advantage, cost advantage and scale advantage in the field of power batteries.

As per recent reports, China’s largest EV brand will be supplying their Blade batteries to the Tesla factory in Berlin. These supplies have already begun, and production of cars using the batteries will commence immediately. The main Tesla product to use these batteries is the Model Y, other products might follow afterwards.

This is not the first time we are getting reports that BYD and Tesla will partner to bring the Blade battery to Tesla vehicles. Sometime last year we heard rumours of this partnership or battery supply as we can also call it. Ever since then no more words have been heard regarding the said arrangement until last month when a BYD official confirmed the supplies. 

This supply will be in small quantity and only the Model Y will use the BYD Blade batteries. Our sources are somewhat optimistic about the growth in the supply of BYD Blade batteries to Tesla next year. But for now, there is no need to raise our hopes high. Besides, only the Tesla factory in Germany will use the Blade batteries, other Tesla factories will stick to using batteries from their current supplier.
