In today’s car market, if you want to buy a pure electric large sedan, the BMW i7 should be the only choice. When BMW released the pure electric flagship i7 in April 2022, it announced that it would launch a more powerful M family version. The i7 M70 xDrive introduced to you today also appeared on the Shanghai Auto Show stage this year. On December 12, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive top electric vehicle was officially launched in Hong Kong. This model has a battery capacity of 101.7 kWh and a maximum cruising range of 488-560km. The price after Hong Kong’s “one-for-one” program starts at HK$2.8999 million. (equivalent to about RMB 2.63 million).

In fact, BMW launched the new i7 xDrive 60 flagship electric luxury car in Hong Kong in November last year. A year later, it launched this high-performance version of the i7 M70 xDrive. The drive unit is highly integrated, and the motor, power equipment and gearbox are integrated. One body, smooth power. The noble temperament can be seen from the interior and M logo design. Of course, the price is also nearly 900,000 more expensive than the standard xDrive60 version. The dealer has set up an experience center on the first basement floor of K11 Musea in Tsim Sha Tsui to provide on-site test drive services.

Appearance:

This model can be equipped with the optional M series performance package, which is combined with a high-gloss black surround mask for the first time. The body and rear of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive feature iconic M designs, such as the M-series side mirrors and M-series side skirts, which strongly demonstrate the ultimate power-oriented personality.

Internal aspect:

The rear seat is equipped with a 31.3-inch BMW cinema screen and Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, which can turn the back seat into a mobile exclusive private theater. M design touches are everywhere in the cabin, including M illuminated door sill strips, uniquely designed Merino leather upholstery, M leather steering wheel and M-exclusive displays on the BMW Curved Display. In addition, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive is also connected to the latest iDrive 8.5 system, BMW iDrive, BMW curved display and BMW Personal Assistant.

Full text summary:
The BMW 7 Series is BMW’s flagship model series, and the i7 is the flagship model entering the electrification era. It is also the leader of the BMW Group in covering electric vehicles, demonstrating BMW’s determination in the field of electrification. The M series represents the high-performance version as always. The maximum output power of the M70 rear-wheel motor is 360kW and the front axle is 190kW. In sport mode, it can generate 1015N·m and accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds, making it the fastest of pure electric BMW M series models. Just on December 4, the BMW Group announced that it had delivered more than 300,000 new energy vehicles in China, the most impressive achievement among luxury brands.

Perhaps different from the mainland, the luxury car BBA is not tied in the minds of Hong Kong people. Hong Kong people prefer Mercedes-Benz and BMW, and Audi is rarely mentioned together. We can get a glimpse of this from the incident where the president of the University of Hong Kong changed his car this year. The president’s car of the University of Hong Kong used to be a Mercedes-Benz S350. Last year, the car replacement process was started. The president only arranged for two models: Mercedes-Benz EQS450 and BMW i7 xDrive60 During the model test drive, there were no executive models from brands such as the Audi A8 (panoramic view of the car). Afterwards, I chose one of the two, and finally selected the more expensive BMW i7 xDrive60.

BMW recently announced a voluntary recall of 14,086 electric vehicles in the iX, i4 and i7 series in the U.S. (2022-2023 models) because of a safety hazard in the battery control system. BMW says the faulty battery control system could accidentally interrupt the power supply, increasing the risk of a crash.

“Specifically, occasional false diagnostics may occur in the battery management electronics, which may cause the electronic control unit to reset. If a reset occurs, this may cause an electrical interruption,” BMW wrote in the recall.

The recall [PDF] and found that in the iX, i4 and i7 series, the specific models affected include the 2022-2023 iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, iX M60, i4 eDrive35, i4 eDrive40, i4 M50, and 2023 i7 xDrive60.

BMW stated that it has not found any traffic accidents caused by the failure of the battery control system, but BMW officials hope to reduce this potential risk through the recall. BMW discovered the problem following a review of internal systems after receiving about 10 reports from dealers and customers since June 2022.

BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles by February 10, 2023. It notified dealers on December 20, 2022, with instructions on how to fix the problem. Customers can bring their cars to the store for free, and the dealership will reprogram the battery according to specific instructions provided by BMW.

The new BMW 7 Series and the pure electric model i7 were officially launched in China today. The official guide price range for the fuel version is 919,000 to 1.269 million RMB, and the official guide price for the i7 xDrive60L pure electric version is 1.459 million RMB.

The exterior and interior of the new car are built with BMW’s latest concept. The exterior adopts a larger grille + split headlights, and the interior is built based on the principle of “Shy Tech” invisible technology, which is simple but not simple. The pure electric model i7 basically follows the design concept of the new 7 series. There are some differences between the two cars mainly in the details. The biggest difference is the use of a completely closed kidney grille. In terms of size, the length, width and height of the new BMW 7 Series reach 5391/1950/1548 mm respectively, and the wheelbase reaches 3215 mm.

The BMW iDrive interactive system equipped with the new BMW 7 Series is equipped with BMW operating system 8.0 and an integrated floating curved screen (12.3-inch instrument panel + 14.9-inch central control screen). The system’s data computing capabilities and image processing capabilities have been greatly improved. The “BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant” has a more anthropomorphic and dynamic visual image, and it will also support wake-up in the front and rear rows, add 20 new functions such as opening and closing doors and activate designated massage seats. In addition, the new car also supports functional technologies such as AR real-world navigation, digital key Plus, 5G interconnection technology, and Gigabit Ethernet.

In terms of power, the new 7-series fuel version offers two models. The 740i is equipped with a 3.0T inline six-cylinder engine + 48V light hybrid system. It is divided into low-power and high-power versions, with a maximum power of 286/380 horsepower respectively; 760i xDrive is equipped with a 4.4T V8 engine + 48V mild hybrid system with a maximum power of 544 horsepower. The BMW i7 adopts the fifth-generation eDrive electric drive technology, equipped with front and rear dual motors, with a combined maximum output power of 400 kW, a peak torque of 745 Nm, and an acceleration time of 0-100 km/h of 4.7 seconds. The battery capacity is 101.7 kWh, and the CLTC standard cruising range is 650 kilometers. It supports DC charging with a maximum power of 195 kW. The DC charging power is 100 kW. It takes 50 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%. It supports a maximum AC charging power of 11 kW. It takes about 10.5 hours to charge from 0 to full. In addition, the new 7 Series provides L2-level driving assistance functions, and will support L3-level automatic driving functions in the future.

BMW last year performed minor surgery on the 2022 X3, changing the taillight style and flattening the headlights, but the most important part of the car’s engine and the display remained unchanged. 2024 X3, in addition to its more aggressive appearance, finally upgraded its engine system to iD8 and supplemented by a curved dual-link screen. Recently, the media has drawn an unofficial imaginary picture based on the latest spy photos of the car.

The media generally believe that the 2024 X3 is one size larger than the current model, with a more aggressive center grille style, but will not copy the 4-series cars with large nostrils. Headlights to flatten the transition, and far less than the 7 Series squint level.

The most critical is the powertrain. Currently known 4.4-liter S68 eight-cylinder machine integrated ISG, it is not known whether the X3M’s S58 and the B58/B48 used in the X3 trim level will be upgraded 48V weak hybrid, and how the X3 plug-in and pure electric models will be laid out? It is expected that the new generation of X3 will be officially announced next year, and the actual car will be delivered in 2024.

In addition, BMW announced that it will use the large pure electric luxury car i7 to develop i7 bulletproof cars for dignitaries.

BMW provided a fleet of i7 vehicles for the just concluded G7 Summit, consisting mainly of i7 xDrive 60 models. It is believed that BMW took the opportunity of the conference reception to discuss the market prospect of pure electric bulletproof cars with the government departments of various countries.

Since the reception cars are mainly used for short distances, such as from the airport to the accommodation and from the accommodation to the conference venue, it would be absurd to still insist on using V8 or even V12 fuel cars in the context of energy-saving and emission reduction. BMW believes that the i7 pure electric models with enhanced armor protection are better than fuel cars in terms of emissions, noise, and performance indicators.

The problem is that the pure electric model is already heavy, with the i7 xDrive 60 models, for example, having an overall mass of 2,640 kg (Ford Raptor 2,682 kg; Toyota Tundra 2,491 kg). Bulletproof cars need to add welded armor plates and bulletproof glass, and then take into account the three full vehicles and mine-resistant chassis, and pure trams to further strengthen the battery protection, the i7 will eventually become a truck weighing three and a half tons.

An all-electric model is the newest member of BMW’s flagship 7-series sedan lineup. As running electric cars requires batteries that cost a bomb, all-electric models have always qualified themselves as luxury items, and BMW’s new i7 is certainly a centrepiece of luxury in this 7-series lineup. Overall, it’s the company’s third all-electric design after the iX crossover and the i4 midsize sedan.

Anyone who looks at the BMW i7 premium sedan from the inside out will understand why BMW refers to it as a “fully-integrated member of the 7 Series line.” The car has a muscular exterior look, with blue accents lining the base of the fascia. The interior scores high for the comfort and the technology offered.

The BMW i7’s high-end stereo system and powered window shades to cut out ambient light make the car the coziest place to watch movies. At the disposal of those sitting at the back is also an optional 8K touch-screen display with an Amazon Fire TV that folds down from the roof. If front seat occupants are feeling somewhat left out, then the centre screen helps them watch streaming videos while the car is parked.

The four-wheel steering of the BMW i7 would allow for tighter curves, whether it’s to seamlessly change lanes on the freeway or to have the car parked in a tight space. Charging at a rate of up to 195 kilowatts on a DC fast charging station, the single battery pack of 101.7 kilowatt-hours of energy would allow the car to yield an output of 536 hp and 549 lb-ft, making it sprint to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and attain a limited top speed of 149 mph.

All poised to compete with the industry leader Tesla, BMW may release the car at U.S. dealerships at a price tag of $119,300.
