The third-generation Apple TV 4K set-top box, released by Apple in October 2022, is now available for the first time in Apple’s refurbished stores in the United States, Canada and some European countries (including Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, etc.).

The official refurbished third-generation Apple TV 4K is $20 cheaper than the new one in the U.S. (currently about RMB 140), with the 64GB Wi-Fi version priced at $109 and the 128GB Wi-Fi and Ethernet version priced at $129. The official refurbished third-generation Apple TV 4K comes with a Siri remote with a USB-C port, power cord and documentation, and comes in a new white box.

Apple says all refurbished products are tested for functionality, inspected and cleaned, and are eligible for the AppleCare + warranty.

The third-generation Apple TV 4K features an A15 Bionic chip with HDR10+ format support, a thinner and lighter design, and increased memory. It’s worth noting that this Apple TV does not come with a USB-C charging cable for the Siri remote (except in Brazil), so you’ll need to purchase one separately if you don’t have one.

In the past few months, a large number of Apple Apple TV users have been reporting problems with the Siri Remote connection, but Apple still has not launched a fix for these problems, even with the recent update of tvOS 16.3 and tvOS 16.3.1.

Apple released a new version of Apple TV 4K last fall with a new A15 bionic chip, HDR 10+ support, and a new Siri Remote that uses a USB-C interface for charging. Apple is also selling it as a separate accessory to previous-generation Apple TV users.

On Reddit and Apple’s support site, there have been numerous user posts complaining about connectivity issues between Apple TV and the Siri Remote. These issues appear to be unique to the new Siri Remote.

Users report that the Siri Remote is frequently disconnected from their Apple TV without any regularity. These users say the Siri Remote will disconnect when Apple TV is playing something, usually minutes after the remote is being used to play the content.

One Reddit user explained.

"I thought maybe the remote was broken, so I charged it for a few hours. Then the remote showed "connected" in the top corner, but disconnected 30 seconds later. It repeated this several times over the next few minutes. I restarted Apple TV, and then the remote reconnected, not caring about it. But two days later, the same thing happened. A complete restart of Apple TV was required to allow the remote to connect. Throughout the process, I was able to use the Control Center remote on my iPhone with no problems."

The latest Apple TV 4K and USB-C Siri Remote was released in November, and Apple has since released several updates to tvOS 16, including tvOS 16.1.1, tvOS 16.2, tvOS 16.3, and tvOS 16.3. However, none of these updates have addressed the above issue.

Twitter user @aaronp613 also pointed out that the new Siri Remote itself has not received a firmware update since its initial launch in November.

Apple has yet to officially acknowledge the issue and has remained silent on the matter.

One method claims that swapping out the HDMI cable used with the Apple TV 4K will fix the problem, and many users have confirmed that this does work.

In January, Apple released tvOS 16.3, available for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD.

The tvOS 16.3 update can be downloaded through the Settings app OTA on Apple TV by going to System > Software Update. Apple TV users who have automatic software updates turned on will automatically be upgraded to tvOS 16.3.

According to feedback from users, Apple tvOS 16.3 unlocks the eARC feature. Apple Apple TV 4K has built-in eARC support. Pair it with up to two HomePod speakers to enjoy home theater audio on all your TV-connected devices.

According to the introduction, eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) is an upgraded version of ARC (Audio Return Channel). It was introduced in 2017 as part of the HDMI 2.1 specification. eARC builds on ARC.

eARC builds on ARC. ARC greatly simplifies TV and home theater setups by enabling TVs to send audio to a bar or AVR over a single HDMI cable. eARC also allows TVs to use a single HDMI cable to send audio generated by built-in streaming applications, cables, satellites and other source devices (e.g., game consoles or Blu-ray players) to a bar or AVR. eARC supports much greater bandwidth and speed than ARC, so it can deliver high-quality, uncompressed audio.

The eARC supports a bandwidth of 37Mb/s and can transmit up to 32 channels of audio, including eight 192 kHz channels of 24-bit uncompressed audio. It also supports DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Atmos formats. In comparison, ARC supports up to six channels of compressed audio with a maximum bandwidth of 1Mb/s.

According to feedback from Apple TV users on the Reddit community, Twitter social media and Apple support forums, there are issues when playing HDR content. The most frequent feedback from users is that the images are too dark or faded.

Apple TV should theoretically see more colorful colors when playing HDR content, with more even exposure of the dark areas (shadows) and light areas (highlights) of the subject.

However, Apple TV users have reported problems with HDR content playback at the end of the update, with errors in hue, color temperature, and even shades of blue, as well as some strange occurrences. Even after turning off color shifting and adjusting brightness and contrast, the problem persists.

Users have reported that it’s hard to see faces in HDR mode, and basic methods like unplugging and replacing HDMI cables don’t solve the problem. According to people on Apple’s support forums, changing from 4K HDR at 60Hz to 4K HDR at 30Hz solved the problem.

Apple’s third-generation Apple TV 4K users have been giving feedback on the Reddit community, MacRumors forums, Apple’s official support forums, Twitter and other social media outlets that the Siri Remote has connectivity issues and users need to restart the remote/set-top box for a temporary fix.

Foreign technology media MacRumors analyzed the user feedback on these connectivity issues and found that they were caused by Bluetooth connectivity failures, even when the Siri Remote and Apple TV 4K were very close together.

Some users have reported intermittent disconnections with the Siri Remote, and the current temporary solution is to re-pair or restart the remote, or unplug the Apple TV’s power cord and plug it back in to reconnect in order to solve the problem.

It is important to note that these issues do not occur when users try to control Apple TV 4K using the Remote app on the iPhone or using the TV remote via HDMI-CEC. This suggests that the failure is indeed the result of a Bluetooth issue between the Remote and Apple TV 4K.

It is unclear what is causing the issue, but there are indications that users are experiencing it after upgrading to the tvOS 16.2 update.

HBO is fixing an “unplayable shows” bug that some users are experiencing in the HBO Max app for Apple TV, according to The Verge.

The issue is widespread and appears to be occurring on all Apple TV 4Ks running tvOS 16.1 and the latest HBO Max app version 52.50.1, which was released on Nov. 16.

Some users have found the issue to be intermittent, while others have been unable to stream content at all without experiencing playback errors, although some have found workarounds that include force-quitting the app, logging out of the app, reinstalling, or restarting their Apple TV.

Chris Willard, senior vice president of communications at HBO, said they are aware of the issues and are working on a fix, which will be included in an upcoming App update.

Until then, two temporary troubleshooting tips suggested by HBO Max customer support include turning off HDR support (in Settings -> Video and Audio, changing the format to SDR and disabling the Match Content, Match Dynamic Range, and Match Frame Rate options) and changing the resolution from 4K to 1080p or 720p.

A week ago, Apple’s latest Apple TV 4K went on sale, using the new A15 Bionic chip. Foreign technology media FlatpanelsHD conducted an in-depth test and compared it with the Sony PlayStation 4/5 game console.

Apple TV 4K performance test
The A15 chip used in this year’s Apple TV 4K has 4 GPU cores, while the chip used on the iPhone 13 Pro series has 5 GPU cores. Also in terms of CPU cores, the Apple TV uses 4 CPU cores, while the iPhone has 5 CPU cores.

Tests done by FlatpanelsHD show that this year’s Apple TV 4K is “about 40 percent faster” compared to the previous-generation Apple TV with the built-in A12 chip. Apple claims it should be 50% faster, but the difference can simply be attributed to differences in testing methods.

Another change this year is that the new Apple TV 4K has no fans inside, making it a smaller and lighter design. How does this affect performance, cooling and throttling? The new Apple TV 4K actually throttles less than the previous model.

In CPU benchmarks, the A15 was about 40 percent faster than the A12 in the previous Apple TV — down from the 50 percent improvement Apple claims. There are two reasons for this: on the one hand, different testing methods may be used, and on the other hand, considering that the A15 has no active cooling, we were surprised to see that the A15 throttles less than the A12.

A 20-minute CPU stress test limited the A12 to 65 percent, while the A15 was limited to just 84 percent, meaning the new Apple TV 4K can sustain most of its CPU performance during long, heavy-duty games.

Apple TV Stress Test Results for the 2021 Model Year

Apple TV Stress Test Results for the 2022 Model Year

Comparing performance with PS5 and Xbox One
CPU aspect
The CPU in the A15 Bionic is much faster than previous generation consoles like the Xbox One and PlayStation 5. The CPU performance core of the A15 is also significantly faster than the PS5’s CPU core (single-core performance), but the PS5 leads the core performance in multi-core because it has 8 cores.

GPU aspect
As for the GPU, Apple TV 4K (2022) graphics performance is spec’d at over 1 TFlops, but it’s somewhat vague as there’s no GPU info or benchmark app for tvOS. It still can’t match previous-generation consoles like the Xbox One in terms of TFlops performance, and it has half the RAM (4GB vs. 8GB).

Storage
On the other hand, Apple TV 4K (2022) has faster RAM with a very fast NVMe SSD, unlike the older hard drives found in previous generation consoles. In theory, both Xbox One and PS4 games should be playable on Apple TV without sacrificing much in terms of frame rate.

The problem with Apple TV isn’t performance, it’s the gaming ecosystem.
Apple has been trying to turn Apple TV into a gaming device for years, but with little success. These performance tests underscore that the problem isn’t performance, but the lack of broader support from developers and game studios. These tests show little change in that department, but the performance of available games continues to impress.

Apple today unveiled the new 2022 Apple TV 4K, which ships without a charging cable for the Siri remote, forcing users to purchase it separately. Previous Apple TV models included a Lightning cable in the box to charge the remote.

The new Siri remote announced today comes with a USB-C port for charging instead of Lightning, but the new Apple TV 4K comes without a USB-C cable in the box. Apple also no longer includes a charging cable when you buy the Siri Remote separately from the online shop for $59.

Apple today began selling a 1-meter USB-C cable in a braided design for $19 ($145 in China).

Apple previously stopped including chargers with iPhone 12 or newer models and self-promoted them as being environmentally friendly. However, iPhone still ships with a Lightning to USB-C cable so the device can at least be charged with a Mac or other device, and the Siri remote now no longer comes with any charging accessories.

The new Apple TV 4K is available to order today and will be available in the US and over 30 other countries on Friday 4 November. Siri Remote.

Note that the new Apple TV 4K packaging still includes the charging cable in Brazil, a country that has fined Apple for not including a charger with the iPhone 12/13 phones.
