Apple today released the Safari Technology Preview 165 update, an experimental browser that Apple has been rolling out since March 2016. Apple designed Safari Technology Preview to test features that may be introduced into future versions of Safari.

The current “Safari Technology Preview” release is built on the Safari 16 update and includes support for features in macOS 13 Ventura, such as live text, passkeys, Web extension improvements, and more.

Safari Technology Preview 165 includes bug fixes and performance improvements for Web Inspector, CSS, JavaScript, Layout, Media, Forms, Web Animations, WebCrypto, WebGL, Loading, Web APIs, Accessibility and Web Extensions.

The current Safari Technology Preview is version 16.4 and is compatible with devices running macOS 13 Ventura and macOS 12 Monterey. However, it is no longer available for macOS Big Sur.

Anyone who has downloaded the browser can get the Safari Technology Preview update through the Software Update mechanism in System Settings.

Safari Technology Preview was introduced by Apple to gather feedback from developers and users about the development process for its browser, which runs alongside the existing Safari browser and is designed for developers but does not require a developer account to use.

Microsoft discovered a macOS vulnerability in July this year that could bypass the Gatekeeper security mechanism to execute malware. After receiving the report from Microsoft, Apple fixed the vulnerability in macOS 13 (Ventura), macOS 12.6.2 (Monterey) and macOS 11.7.2 (Big Sur) updates released on the 13th of this month.

Microsoft called the discovered macOS vulnerability “Achilles” and notified it to Apple through “Coordinated Vulnerability Disclosure”. The vulnerability allows attackers to bypass Apple’s Gatekeeper security mechanism and plant arbitrary malware on Mac devices.

Microsoft detailed how the vulnerability was discovered and the implications of such issues in a recent article. These details are useful to security experts and researchers. “Gatekeeper plays an important role in stopping macOS malware, but it’s not completely secure,” Microsoft said in a blog post.

The latest macOS Ventura 13.1 Beta update further enhances the Find My feature with support for finding AirTag, a feature previously available only on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch versions of Find My.

In the previous macOS version, users could only find devices like iPhones and AirPods through the Find My feature, but this Beta update extends the trackable devices to AirTag and other item tracking devices that support Find My for the first time.

To find this new option, open the Find My app on your Mac. Then click on the “Items” tab and click on the accessory you want to find. In addition to the usual options for locating items, the Beta version also includes a new “Play Sound” option. Clicking on a trackable accessory like AirTag makes a sound, just like on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.
