Models of the iPhone 16 series have leaked online, allowing us to better understand the design of the new phone.

It is noticed that one of the pictures shows the change in the size of the new machine. Unlike last year, it is reported that this year’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will use larger displays, 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches respectively. inch. By comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max have display sizes of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches respectively.

The picture also shows the adjustment of the key layout of the new machine. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will use the “function keys” that were previously only equipped on the Pro series. However, the picture shows that the new “function keys” seem to be larger in size.

The much-talked-about rear camera module has also received a redesign, with a raised pill-shaped part housing the wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle lenses (available for both iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus). The microphone is located next to the lens, and the flash has been moved to the back of the body beyond the raised part.

It is worth mentioning that all four iPhone 16 models will be equipped with a new independent physical “camera key” for taking photos and videos. The button is located on the side of the phone, on the same side as the power button, and replaces the space for the 5G millimeter-wave antenna on the US version.

The picture shows that the “camera button” is almost flush with the fuselage. Although there are still rumors that the keys will be mechanical rather than capacitive, according to The Information, the keys will support pressure sensing and touch operations. Apple believes that the “camera button” will become a major selling point of the iPhone 16 series, further enhancing its capabilities as a video shooting tool.

According to foreign technology media MacRumors, the iPhone 16 Pro has entered the “Proto2” development stage. Apple has decided to abandon the previous prototype design. The operation button design is similar to the iPhone 15 Pro model.

The media report that Apple tested four button configurations and two sizes when developing the iPhone 16 Pro model:

Unified volume buttons with small action buttons

Unified volume buttons with large action buttons and new camera button

Independent volume buttons, large operation buttons and camera buttons are flush with the frame

Independent volume buttons, small operation buttons, camera button and frame

The earliest prototype of iPhone 16 Pro was designed by Project Bongo. It had a unified volume button and a small multi-function button, both located on the left, and the power button was located on the right. However, due to unsatisfactory test results and high hardware failure rate, Apple abandoned this design.

But part of Project Bongo’s design, the unified volume buttons, showed up in early designs for the iPhone 16 Pro.

The second prototype of the iPhone 16 Pro also uses unified volume buttons, but it has a larger action button that is close to the size of the volume buttons. The prototype also adds a camera button below the right side of the power button.

Later prototypes (pictured above) featured separate volume buttons rather than a unified button design. Apple plans to add capacitive action buttons and camera buttons to these new products, both of which are flush with the bezel and use force sensor technology.

In the latest “Proto2” design, Apple has changed the action buttons again. Now, Apple has gone with a smaller action button that’s essentially the same as the one on the iPhone 15 Pro, ditching the larger flush look.

While it’s unclear how this affects Apple’s future work on the capacitive action button, such a significant design change suggests it has been canceled or delayed to a future iPhone version.

MacRumors recently published a blog post to share the latest news about Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models, and produced relevant renderings based on prototype information.

It is reported that Apple has designed multiple prototypes for iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max internally, and it has not yet finalized which one to choose. However, the media believes that the following renderings represent the latest renderings of the next-generation iPhone based on reliable internal sources. A clear outlook.

Increase screen size
The source said the iPhone 16 Pro (codenamed Diablo) has a 6.3-inch screen, compared to the 6.1-inch current model; the iPhone 16 Pro Max (codenamed Lightning) has a 6.9-inch screen, compared to the 6.7-inch current model.

One of the reasons why Apple increased the screen size is that the iPhone 16 Pro also has a periscope camera (quadruple prism).

Action button
During Apple’s development phase, the overall shape of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max retained the design of their predecessors, but the company experimented with different design details of the devices.

The biggest change in Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro series is the elimination of the mute paddle and the use of operation buttons instead.

The iPhone 16 series models launched this year will also follow suit and adopt operation buttons.

Apple has experimented with larger sizes and different designs of action buttons, but current design documents show that the action buttons will be the same size as those on the current iPhone 15 Pro.

An early action button design, codenamed Atlas, was conceived as a larger capacitive button with a force sensor.

Given that the recent iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max designs did not feature this larger action button, the future of Project Atlas remains unclear, and it is possible that Apple canceled Project Atlas in favor of standard mechanical action buttons.

Added photo button
Apple has a new camera button on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

The shooting button, codenamed Nova, is expected to feature capacitive buttons and force sensors, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently confirmed that it will be used for shooting video.

Note: The camera button is located below the power button, which means that on the US model, Apple moved the millimeter wave antenna from the right side of the device to the left. The capture button will be flush with the iPhone’s frame and not raised like the power and volume buttons.

Material and color
In terms of materials, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will continue to use the same grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) used in the iPhone 15 Pro, with no significant changes to the overall appearance.

The document shows that among Apple’s test models, the prototype is silver, but the color should be called “White Titanium” after it is launched on the market.

It is reported that Apple will continue to use the color options of the iPhone 15 Pro and plans to add another color option, but there is no detailed information about the new color option yet.

After the Apple software team released the iOS 17 version update, the development focus has been on the next major version, iOS 18. According to Apple’s past release rules, it is expected to release a beta version in June next year and a stable version in September next year.

 Four models: no derivative models

Foreign technology media MacRumors recently published a report and shared information about the early development version of iOS 18.

The leaked information shows that the internal development code of Apple’s iOS 18 system is “Crystal”, citing 4 unreleased iPhone models, which is in line with the existing leaked information. Attachment list as follows

 D47 – iPhone 16

 D48 – iPhone 16 Plus

 D93 – iPhone 16 Pro

 D94 – iPhone 16 Pro Max

Previous information revealed that Apple’s top model to be launched next year will be called iPhone 16 Ultra, but no relevant evidence has been found in the code.

In theory, if Apple wants to develop a derivative version of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, it may use the “D94” device identifier, such as using a separate identifier (D95 or D94a), to clearly distinguish it from other configurations of hardware.

When Apple was developing the iPhone 15 Pro Max, there was a derivative version called “D84S” that mainly tested a proprietary 5G modem.

The “S” in this may stand for “Sinope,” which is the project code name for Apple’s internal 5G modem. Although Apple did not launch the model to the public in the end, it gave the outside world a rough idea of Apple’s internal naming method for device identifiers.
All series are equipped with A18 chips: it is expected that there will be naming differences between A18 and A18 Pro

In addition, the system code section also shows that all four iPhone 16 models use the new SoC t8140 (codename Tahiti), which is Apple’s internally developed A18 chip.

Starting with the iPhone 14 series, Apple has used different processor specifications for the standard and Pro versions, thus widening the difference between the two versions.

It is reported that although the iPhone 16 series will use the same t8140 chip, there will be differences, such as the use of A18 and A18 Pro brands.
Powered by Broadcom’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips

In addition to the A18 chip, according to information cited by the operating system, the iPhone 16 series will use Broadcom’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chips, but no other information has leaked so far.

According to Korean media The Elec, Apple plans to introduce a quadruple reflective prism (Tetraprism) design into the iPhone 16 Pro model launched next year. LG Innotek will become a major player in Apple’s supply chain.

Currently, quadruple reflection prisms are mainly supplied by LG Innotek and Jahwa Electronics, with the former accounting for 60-70% and the latter accounting for 30-40%.

During the mass production of iPhone 15 Pro Max this year, Apple judged that LG Innotek has a higher yield rate and the quadruple reflection prism produced is more stable than Jahwa Electronics. According to reports, Apple will increase the proportion of LG Innotek orders next year.

According to reports, Apple relies more on LG Innotek, but in order to meet the changes of iPhone 16 and subsequent products, it requires Jahwa Electronics to increase production capacity. Public data shows that Jahwa Electronics invested 191 billion won ($146 million) in new facilities from April last year to March this year.

Jahwa Electronics is currently advancing ball guide actuator technology, which can move the lens barrel as the balls roll, so it is superior to Apple’s existing spring-type actuators in terms of driving speed, accuracy and battery consumption.

It was reported in December last year that LG Innotek, Apple’s important camera module OEM, plans to officially launch an ultra-compact optical zoom camera module at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

This camera module is an ultra-compact module that enables telephoto camera functionality in smartphones. The zoom lens mechanism of a mirrorless camera can be implemented on smartphones to achieve clearer images in the 85-125mm focal length range without compromising image quality during video recording.

To ensure clear images across the 85-125mm focal length range, LG Innotek has developed a zoom actuator that delivers clear image quality across the entire range of 4x to 9x magnification.

In the latest market research briefing, Ming-Chi Kuo of Tianfeng Securities predicted that in 2024, the two fastest-growing brands in the world in terms of shipments of smartphones equipped with periscope cameras will be Apple and Huawei.

Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple plans to also equip the iPhone 16 Pro with a quadruple reflective prism design to be launched next year. It is estimated that shipments of iPhones equipped with a quadruple reflective prism design will increase by 160% year-on-year next year.

Ming-Chi Kuo also believes that Huawei’s P70, P70 Pro and P70 Art phones launched in the first half of 2024 will also be equipped with periscope cameras, and due to the use of its own Kirin chips, the P70 series shipments are expected to increase by 100% year-on-year in 2024.

The main manufacturer of periscope cameras for Apple and Huawei’s phones next year is Largan Light, which is expected to account for 85-90% of Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro series; and 50-60% of Huawei’s phones.

It is also learned from Ming-Chi Kuo’s briefing that the production yield rate of Largan’s Apple orders has improved significantly since 4Q23 and has begun to contribute to profits, and the overall periscope orders in 2024 will increase significantly by about 130%, so it will win in 2024. Profits are expected to exceed market consensus.

According to the latest news obtained by UDN media from supply chain channels, Apple is currently actively communicating with multiple suppliers and plans to upgrade the telephoto lens for the iPhone 16 Pro model launched next year.

Supply chain sources say that Apple plans to use more advanced glass lens modules to achieve a thinner, lighter design, shorter lenses, and improved optical zoom capabilities. However, the production process is complex and early production is insufficient. At the initial stage of launch, it is limited to telephoto lenses.

It is reported that Apple recently sent representatives to visit molded glass supplier Hoya. Note: Hoya is a multinational optical instrument manufacturer originating from Japan. Its products include semiconductor equipment such as masks, storage devices, glasses and contact lenses. , optical glass, and even information technology services such as information systems and ASP. It is also well-known as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of lenses.

The media believes that the increase in the cost of the new telephoto lens will be passed on to consumers next year, suggesting that the iPhone 16 Pro model will further increase its price.

It was reported in September this year that blogger @digitalchatstation broke the news that Apple is considering introducing this set of configurations for next year’s iPhone 16 (Pro) series, including 1/1.14″± super outsole + 1MG + 7P molded glass mold Group + periscope super telephoto combination.

Haitong International Securities technical analyst Jeff Pu recently released a market research report, believing that Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with Snapdragon X75 modems, while the two standard models retain the X70 modem.

Leaving aside the iPhone SE model, Apple’s four iPhone models will all use the same modem. Jeff Pu believes that Apple hopes to further expand the difference between the standard iPhone model and the Pro model, and next year’s models will use different modems.

Note: Jeff Pu has made many accurate revelations in the past, which has a certain degree of credibility. If he goes by his point of view, then the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will retain the X70 modem; while the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will use the X75 modem.

Qualcomm released the Snapdragon X75 modem in February 2023, which is also the world’s first “5G Advanced-ready” baseband product, supports ten carrier aggregation, and promises 10Gbps downlink speeds in Wi-Fi 7 and 5G.

Qualcomm says this provides simpler manufacturing, with some chips taking up 25 percent less physical area. Additionally, putting mmWave/Sub-6 on a single chip can provide up to 20% energy efficiency improvements over the X70.
