Apple’s iPhone 14 series of phones on the market for less than a year and there is a battery health decline too fast problem. Some users have reported that their phone batteries have lost more than 10% of their capacity after a few months of use. Apple says this is normal, and only when the battery’s capacity falls below 80 per cent will it be eligible for a free replacement under warranty.

If users want to replace their batteries, they have two options: either pay Apple $99 to replace it with a genuine battery, or go to a third-party repairer and have it replaced with a non-genuine battery. However, the latter carries a risk because Apple serializes the parts.

Serialization processing means that Apple adds a unique serial number to each part and requires a match between the part and the logic board. If the battery is replaced with a non-genuine battery or one if removed from another iPhone 14 handset, the phone will not recognize the new battery and will disable the battery health feature, which means the user will not be able to view the remaining capacity and performance status of the battery.

Repair expert Ricky Panesar says that to avoid this problem, you have to use proprietary software provided by Apple to synchronize the serial numbers of the old and new parts. However, doing so requires specialized microelectronics and genuine batteries. Currently, there are not many repairers around the world who can provide this service.

Serialization not only affects the iPhone 14 series phones but also other Apple products such as the Apple Pencil, iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. If parts of these products are replaced without being matched, issues such as drawing lines not being straight and shadows appearing on the screen may occur.

This practice has sparked some criticism of Apple as limiting the free choice of users and third-party repairers, increasing the cost and difficulty of repairs, harming consumers, and not helping to protect the environment.

Apple today announced that the satellite communications feature available on iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is now available for users in Australia and New Zealand.

The satellite communication feature is now supported in Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States, all of which can now be used for emergency distress and location via satellite.

When the phone does not receive a cellular or Wi-Fi signal properly, users can use emergency SOS via satellite to send a distress text message to an emergency service center and share their location with friends and family in the Find app.

Apple iPhone 14 automatically enables satellite capabilities when you’re disconnected from cellular networks and Wi-Fi. Of course, establishing a satellite connection usually requires a clear view of the sky, but iOS also directs users to point their phones in a specific direction to the satellite overhead.

At this stage, data transmission speeds for cellular satellite communications are very slow, so the iPhone can only help users send brief messages. If needed, emergency services can respond and have a two-way conversation.

When a nearby emergency service center supports text-based satellite communications, your emergency SOS will connect directly to that channel, otherwise, it will require Apple Relay Center staff to forward the emergency message they receive to the emergency services.

Of course, Apple currently says it will only provide satellite communications capability for free for two years, starting when the device is activated or when the service is available in a specific region (whichever is later). Apple has not, however, disclosed how it will charge after the two-year free trial period ends.

Apple’s iPhone 14 standard version is currently assembled mainly in China and India. But according to Brazilian tech media MacMagazine, there is now an additional Assembled in Brazil.

After buying a blue 128GB iPhone 14 model, a local user accidentally found the words “Assembled in Brazil” on the packaging and the device’s part number ending in “BR / A,” suggesting that the iPhone was assembled in that country. The device’s part number ends with “BR / A,” indicating that the iPhone was assembled in that country.

The part numbers for iPhones sold in Brazil and made in China end in “BZ / A” or “BE / A”.

For now, the Brazilian factory only assembles the base iPhone 14, as no Pro or Plus models with the “BR / A” identifier have been found.

Foreign technology media MacRumors reported that Apple plans to hold a special spring event next week and will launch yellow for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models.

Apple usually launches a new color scheme for the iPhone model at the spring conference. Summary of the new colors added by Apple in previous spring events as follows:

In March 2017, Apple added (PRODUCT) RED special editions to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

In April 2018, Apple added (PRODUCT) RED special editions to the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

In April 2021, Apple added purple to the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini.

In March 2022, Apple added green to the iPhone 13 and Pale Green to the iPhone 13 Pro.

Apple offered yellow options for the iPhone XR in 2018 and the iPhone 11 in 2019. It’s unclear if Apple plans to offer a new color for the iPhone 14 Pro models, but the yellow could be closer to the existing gold option for these devices.

Apple iOS

It should be noted that due to the configuration cache problem of Apple’s regional node servers, there may be a slight delay in the detection of upgrade updates in some places, usually within half an hour, not too long.

In the official version of iOS 16.3.1, the car accident detection of Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models has been optimized. Specifically, this update provides the following important bug fixes and security updates for iPhone:

iCloud settings may become unresponsive or display incorrectly when an app is using iCloud;

Siri’s “find me” request may not work;

Car crash detection is optimized for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models.

Apple foundry Pegatron reported January revenue of NT$124.608 billion (currently about RMB 28.161 billion), up 10.50 percent sequentially and 1.19 percent year-over-year, a record high for the same period last year and better than market expectations, according to financial data.

Pegatron pointed out that the increase in revenue in January was mainly due to the communication business. According to Taiwan’s Economic Daily, the market expects that Pegatron’s revenue will rise against the trend in January this year, mainly due to the drive of the old Apple iPhone 13 and the transfer of some iPhone 14 Pro orders.

In addition, Pegatron shipped 350,000 to 400,000 notebook computers in January, a decrease of 30% month-on-month and 50% year-on-year, mainly due to fewer working days and traditional seasonal off-season factors. Looking forward to this year, Pegatron believes that overall operations will grow slightly, but new businesses such as automotive electronics and communication products are expected to continue to grow.

Taiwanese media pointed out that Pegatron initially received some iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus assembly orders from Apple last year, and was the main foundry for the iPhone 14 Plus. However, under Apple’s pricing strategy error, the sales of iPhone 14 Plus were poor, which also dragged down the performance of the main foundry Pegatron in the fourth quarter of last year.

When the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max production capacity of Foxconn, the largest iPhone foundry, was affected, Apple released some high-end orders to Pegatron and Luxshare Precision to avoid production risks.

For the first quarter of this year, Pegatron said that it expects the performance of the communications business (which is mainly iPhone assembly) this quarter will be “not weak in the off-season”, which is the same as the revenue performance in the fourth quarter of last year.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple iPhone 14 has added a “car accident detection” feature. This means that if the phone detects that the user has been in a serious car accident, it will call emergency services. However, since the phone’s release, false alarms have been happening.

Every false call places an undue burden on local emergency services. In this latest incident, emergency services in the Northern Alps of Nagano Prefecture, Japan, say they received 134 false alarms between December 16 and January 23, primarily due to the iPhone 14 crash detection system being incorrectly triggered while users were skiing.

Overall, Japanese emergency services received a total of 919 calls during the month, which means that the approximately 100 false alarms caused by the iPhone crash detection feature accounted for more than one-tenth of their workload.

In addition, false alarms from iPhone crash detection during winter sports have been reported across the United States. Another high incidence of false alarms was triggered by roller coasters. This may be because the high speeds and crashes involved in these activities can easily be confused by the algorithm as a pattern of driving and car crashes.

When the iPhone thinks a crash has occurred, it starts a countdown on the user’s device (accompanied by a loud warning alert) before automatically calling emergency services, and the user can choose to cancel the process. However, during activities such as roller coasters or skiing, users may not hear the alert and therefore not be aware that the situation is occurring and will not cancel the call.

Sources say Apple is working with local emergency services to further mitigate this issue. iOS 16.1.2 release notes in late December showed that Apple added “crash detection optimization” to iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models.

Of course, in addition to false alarms, there have been numerous incidents where crash detection has worked as expected and helped save lives. Just today, ABC reported that iPhone’s crash detection alerted emergency services to a car accident in Australia, allowing police to arrive on the scene just eight minutes after the accident.

According to the latest export data, Apple became the first Indian company to surpass the $1 billion (currently around 6.78 billion CNY, Rs 81 billion) smartphone export milestone in a single month in December last year, and the company just overtook Samsung as India’s largest smartphone exporter in November last year.

Meanwhile, India’s total electronics exports reached US$16.69 billion in December, up 51.56% from US$10.99 billion in the same month last year.

According to the report, the rise in the value of Apple’s exports in India has coincided with the growth in exports of made-in-India electronics, with Indian factories growing by more than 51 percent year-on-year in the last three quarters of 2022.

Apple currently has three major foundries in India – Foxconn, PEGATRON and Wistron – that currently manufacture devices such as the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus in India. In addition, Apple has a number of smaller OEMs that also export iPhones from India.

Foxconn and PEGATRON’s Indian factories are located in Tamil Nadu, while Wistron has a branch in Karnataka. According to ET News, these companies will contribute to India’s goal of $9 billion in phone exports by 2023.
