Developer Ricky Mondello recently found that after installing the new macOS Sonoma update, users can use Apple’s password manager on Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and other browsers.

After running an update to the latest beta version of the macOS Sonoma update, Mondello discovered that it is possible to use iCloud Keychain on non-Safari browsers to auto-populate passwords and CAPTCHAs and that these third-party browsers also support saving these new passwords.

Apple also for macOS Sonoma users, in the Chrome Web Store and Edge Web Store uploaded the “iCloud Passwords” extension program,

The following overview:

  • iCloud Passwords lets you populate a password from your iCloud keychain when you sign in to a website in Chrome.
  • iCloud Passwords is a Chrome extension for Windows users that allows you to use the same Safari browser-strength password you created on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac when accessing websites in Chrome on a Windows PC.
  • iCloud Passwords also saves any new passwords you create in Chrome to your iCloud keychain, making them available on your Apple device.

Apple announced that since iOS / iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma, third-party apps that use Apple’s iCloud database will no longer be affected and can continue to sync data after users turn off iCloud Drive.

In previous versions of macOS and iOS, if users disabled iCloud Drive in Settings or System Preferences, third-party apps (such as CloudKit) could continue to sync even if they did not use iCloud Drive. Apple blocked third-party applications (such as CloudKit) from accessing iCloud by default, even if they did not use iCloud Drive.

Some users may have previously thought that iCloud Drive was taking up a lot of storage space and chose to disable it, but didn’t realize that disabling it would also prevent third-party apps from syncing.

Some iCloud users have reported that after upgrading to the new iOS 16.3 version, apps like iCloud Drive and Photos are unable to sync. Foreign tech media AppleInsider initially believes that the lack of two-factor authentication is the cause.

In Apple’s official support forums and Reddit community, many users have reported that iCloud has been experiencing sync failures after upgrading to iOS 16.3. Services including iCloud Drive and iCloud Backup receive an “An unexpected error occurred. Please try again later” error alert.

iOS 16.3 introduces a new Apple ID security key feature. Apple says the optional security feature is designed for individuals who want “extra protection against targeted attacks like phishing or social scams.

When enabled, logging into Apple ID requires entering the user’s account password and then using a FIDO-authenticated security key to complete two-factor authentication instead of the traditional six-digit authentication code from another Apple device.

The majority of users who have reported these sync failures have not enabled two-factor authentication. Follow-up reports indicate that enabling two-factor authentication for Apple IDs may be a workaround, but not everyone will want to enable this security feature on their accounts.
