The AMD Ryzen 7040 series processors, codenamed Phoenix, will be released at the end of this month/early next month, according to @goldenpigupgrade.com, which is expected to be available at the end of April for notebooks with the Ryzen 7040HS and early next month for models with the 7840U processor.

AMD Phoenix is a new generation of APUs with Zen4 and RDNA3 architecture for laptops, designed to succeed the Ryzen 6000 series codenamed Rembrandt.

In fact, AMD first came up with this series of processors at CES in early January and initially announced the availability of the Raptor 7045HX series in February and the Raptor 7040HS series in March, but the Raptor 7045HX gaming notebooks were delayed until the end of March and only one ROG Magic Fighter 7 Plus series was available. In contrast, Intel Raptor Lake-powered laptops have been available for 2 months now.

It’s worth mentioning that AMD originally replaced the H series with the HS series this generation, but also customized the Ryzen 7040H series for the Chinese mainland market, with the exact same specifications as the Ryzen 7040HS series.

AMD officially sent a statement to foreign technology media Tom’s Hardware, which is as follows.

"To align with the platform and provide the best user experience, we now expect our OEM partners to launch the first laptops with the Ryzen 7040HS family of processors in April."

AMD officials did not announce the specific reasons for the delay. However, AMD recently tweaked the specs of these chips, removing support for the PCIe 5.0 interface and lowering the peak clock of the integrated GPU.

The AMD 7040 series laptop processor uses a 4nm process, adopts an 8-core Zen4 CPU and RDNA3 core display, the core display specification can reach up to 12CU 3.0GHz, and is equipped with the latest Ryzen AI engine. In terms of memory support, AMD 7040 series laptops support DDR5-5600 and LPDDR5x-7500.

The model parameters of the AMD Ryzen 7040H/ HS series attached are as follows:

R9 7940H/HS: 8 cores 16 threads, up to 5.2GHz, 45/35W TDP

R7 7840H / HS: 8 cores 16 threads, up to 5.1GHz, 45/35W TDP

R5 7640H/HS: 6 cores 12 threads, up to 5.0GHz, 45/35W TDP

AMD officials have updated the specification sheet for the Ryzen 7040 series “Phoenix Point” processor, detailing the processor’s I/O feature set. There are several details to be aware of, including PCIe-Express lanes, memory, and more.

Does not support PCIe-Express Gen 5

The Ryzen 7040 processor has a total of 20 PCI-Express Gen 4 lanes, all of which are “available” (that is, the 4 lanes that do not count as the chipset bus).

That means the chip has a full PCI-Express 4.0 x16 interface for a discrete graphics card and a PCI-Express 4.0 x4 for connecting to an M.2 NVMe slot.

For comparison, the client I/O dies in the “Raphael” desktop MCM and the “Dragon Range” mobile MCM provide a total of 28 Gen5 lanes (24 usable, with x16 PEG + two x4 for CPU-attached M.2 slot).

Memory

Another interesting thing about “Phoenix Point” is the type of memory. The processor has a dual-channel DDR5 memory interface, and also supports LPDDR5 and LPDDR5x.

The maximum memory speed is DDR5-5600 and LPDDR5-7600. What’s really interesting is that it supports up to 256GB of memory capacity, twice that of “Raphael” and “Dragon Range”. This bodes well for AMD’s eventual Socket AM5 APU based on the “Phoenix Point” chip design.

graphics card

The Ryzen 7040 series is equipped with the “Radeon 780M” processor, the new 780M is based on the latest RDNA3 graphics architecture, contains 12 compute units (768 stream processors), and has the same dual instruction issue rate capability as the desktop Radeon RX 7900 series GPU and the Matrix Math Accelerator, iGPU with an engine clock of up to 2.90 GHz.

Phoenix Point’s iGPU is confirmed to adopt AMD’s latest Radiance display engine, supports DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR10 and HDMI 2.1, and natively supports single-line 8K 60 Hz display. It also has the latest VCN media engine with hardware-accelerated AV1 encoding, up to Up to 4K @ 240 Hz 10 bpc, and 4320p @ 175 Hz 8 bpc H.265; and hardware-accelerated decoding of virtually all standard resolutions/bit depths/frames of MPEG2, VC1, VP9, H.264, H.265, and AV1 .

On TSMC’s 4nm EUV foundry node, the “Phoenix Point” monolithic silicon has a die area of 178 mm2 and a transistor count of 25 billion. In addition to the iGPU, it also has a single 8-core “Zen 4” CCX. Each of the 8 CPU cores has 1MB of dedicated L2 cache and shares 32MB of L3 cache.

AMD today released the latest architecture processors such as Ryzen 7040 and 7045, and also updated a batch of Zen3+/Zen3 architecture “vest” processors, whose models are 7035/7030 series.

As shown in the figure above, AMD 7035 series processors can choose 4-8 cores, and the core display specification is up to 12CU. The 7035 series can be regarded as the frequency-boosting model of the old Ryzen 6000 series. For example, the R7 7735U can be regarded as the frequency-boosting version of the R7 6800U. The frequency of the R7 7735U can reach 4.75GHz, and the frequency of the R7 6800U can reach 4.7GHz, with a boost of up to 0.05GHz.

The Ryzen 7030 series can be seen as a frequency-boosted version of the Ryzen 5000 series. It is worth mentioning that the Ryzen 5000 series already has a 5025 series with increased frequency. In terms of frequency, the R7 7730U has a maximum of 4.5GHz, while the old R7 5825U also has a maximum of 4.5GHz, without any improvement.

AMD 7035 and 7030 series processors are expected to be found in low- and mid-range notebooks.
