Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud service, announced at the re:Invent global conference that BYD has selected AWS as the preferred cloud provider (overseas) for its connected car platform. AWS will provide a “scalable, reliable and secure foundation” for BYD’s core operations, including storing vehicle system data.

It is noted that BYD has used Amazon EKS and content distribution network service Amazon CloudFront to build a connected vehicle architecture that can automatically deploy new functions and applications, including the latest in-vehicle navigation and infotainment services, providing high-performance, interactive Real-time in-car experience.

By running its connected vehicle platform on AWS, BYD provides automatic updates to improve vehicle safety, operation, maintenance efficiency and the overall driving experience. Through the app, owners can monitor the status of their vehicle, including battery level and mileage, remotely lock and unlock doors and windows, and locate the vehicle in the parking lot.

BYD is also leveraging Amazon to deliver in-car audio experiences, with its connected vehicles in Europe now equipped with Amazon Music (standard on new vehicles) to provide high-quality music streaming.

Nokia Chief Licensing Officer Arvin Patel recently issued a press release on Nokia’s official website, claiming that Nokia is filing lawsuits against Amazon and HP in the U.S. Federal Court of Delaware, the European Unified Patent Court, and courts in other countries and regions. The lawsuit was filed on the grounds that the two companies made “unauthorized use of video streaming patents with Nokia.”

Nokia said that Amazon has long been using Nokia’s patented technology for video compression, content delivery and content recommendations, and HP has also blatantly violated Nokia’s patented streaming technology and is unwilling to do so. To pay a “reasonable fee”, Nokia decided to sue the two companies.

Nokia claims it has been in discussions with Amazon.com and HP over the years and has offered Amazon and HP “fair terms” to negotiate licenses for patented technology, but both companies have rejected the offers.

Bloomberg — This week Amazon issued new guidance to managers informing them that they can now fire employees who don’t comply with the company’s return-to-work policy, and laying out the process for doing so, according to Business Insider.

The internal document reportedly instructs managers that they should first speak privately with employees who do not meet the requirement of being in the office at least three days a week and have a second conversation after the employee still refuses to show up. If the employee still doesn’t show up to the office as required after that, they could risk being fired.

Amazon had notified employees in February that most would need to be in the office at least three days a week starting in May. Under this rule, some employees would need to move to fulfil the requirement.

According to Amazon spokesman Rob Muñoz, “Now that we’re a few months in, the vast majority of our employees are coming to the office more frequently each week, there’s more energy, connection, and collaboration, and we’re hearing it from our employees and from the businesses around our offices. As we expect with any policy, we expect our team to follow them and will take appropriate action if someone chooses not to.”

Muñoz said a relatively small number of employees are required to relocate, and that the company offers relocation benefits to anyone who is asked to do so.

In late August, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy warned there could be a crackdown for anyone who still doesn’t comply with the return-to-work policy. “I understand if you can’t disagree and are committed to (the return-to-work policy), but you may not be a good fit for Amazon because we’re going to be back in the office at least three days a week.” Jassy said in a meeting, “For all of our teammates, coming in more than three days a week is the right thing to do, and it’s not OK for some people to refuse to do that.”

The e-commerce giant employs more than 1.46 million people globally and has a number of offices, including its headquarters in Seattle and a second headquarters in Arlington, Va.

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) — With Amazon planning to place ads on its Prime Video video streaming service early next year, company executives are now asking advertisers to commit to investing a lot of money in the service.

The demands are said to be more aggressive than those made by Netflix when it launched its ads last year. Advertising executives say this shows Amazon’s confidence in Prime Video’s advertising prospects.

One of the advertising executives said that in a meeting with a major global ad agency, Amazon executives asked for an initial commitment of more than $100 million in advertising by 2024.

And another executive said that in a meeting with a smaller ad agency, Amazon asked for more than $50 million in placement commitments.

Both advertising executives said Amazon’s demands were very high. One of them noted that the size of the placement Amazon is asking for is what their company now spends annually on Hulu. Hulu is the largest subscription streaming service in the U.S. based on ad sales.

Last month, Amazon sent a briefing document to advertisers saying it would launch Prime Video ads in 2024. Amazon said at the time that it would be the first to add ads to Prime Video programs and movies in the U.S., U.K., Canada and Germany, with a rollout later next year in France, Spain, Italy, Mexico and Australia.

Amazon didn’t release its subscriber numbers in the filing, but said it is now the third-largest streaming platform in the U.S. behind YouTube and Netflix.

Prime Video ads will reach more than 115 million monthly U.S. subscribers, but subscribers will also have the option to pay an additional $2.99 per month to waive the ads.

Amazon’s official release, United Launch Alliance (ULA) an Atlas V rocket lifted off from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

It carried two prototype satellites from Amazon’s Project Kuiper (Low Earth Orbit Satellite Broadband Program) into space before deploying them at an altitude of 311 miles (500 kilometers) above Earth. The launch marks the beginning of Amazon’s “Protoflight” mission.

At 2:53 p.m. EDT, Amazon’s Mission Operations Center in Redmond, Washington, confirmed first contact with KuiperSat-2, establishing the first telemetry link between the satellite and the Telemetry, Tracking and Control (TT&C) antenna. First contact is one of the key steps in the Protoflight mission that will allow Amazon to begin downlinking data about the satellite’s health and establish more regular communications with the satellite.

Prototype satellites KuiperSat-1 and KuiperSat-2 are understood to be the first of more than 3,200 satellites Kuiper plans to build and deploy over the next six years. While Protoflight is just one milestone in the development and testing phase of the program, it is an important learning opportunity for the team.

Project Kuiper consists of three key elements: advanced low-orbit broadband satellites; small, affordable customer terminals; and a secure, resilient terrestrial communications network. The Protoflight mission will test all three components, as well as the teams and systems that manage them.

At the end of the mission, Amazon plans to actively de-orbit both satellites before they eventually burn up in the Earth’s atmosphere — part of its commitment to space safety.

Amazon’s first production satellites are expected to be launched in the first half of 2024 and are expected to be beta-tested with early commercial customers by the end of 2024.

Clubhouse audio social app in 2021 around once big fire, Amazon previously launched a similar app called Amp, in an attempt to compete with Clubhouse.

According to news distributed internally by Steve Boom, Amazon’s director of digital music, the app has now officially shut down after only 18 months of operation.

After inquiries that Amp was released in March 2022, and that in the audio social app, users could act as DJs, share music with other users and provide real-time reviews.

Amazon announced at the time that Amp would be joined by notable musicians including Nicki Minaj, Pusha T, singer Tinashe, violinist and electronic artist Lindsey Stirling, Travis Barker, Lil Yachty and Big Boi, as well as popular radio hosts Zach Sang, Kat Corbett, Christian James Hand and Guy Raz, among others.

In July 2022, foreign media outlet TechCrunch claimed the app had more than 700,000 monthly active users, but in late 2022, user interest in such audio social apps waned, and instead of seeing subsequent substantial growth, Amp app users gradually declined, with almost half of Amp’s employees being let go during Amazon’s massive layoffs last year.
