Study Finds U.S. EVs Run an Average of 7,205 Kilometers Less Per Year Compared to Gasoline Vehicles

A recent study conducted in the United States showed that compared with gasoline-powered vehicles (including hybrids and plug-in hybrids), pure electric vehicles (BEV) drive more miles per year.

The peer-reviewed study, conducted by researchers at George Washington University (GW), used odometer readings from 12.5 million used sedans and 11.4 million used SUVs that came on the market between 2016 and 2022. The study found that while most internal combustion engine, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles have similar driving ranges, pure electric vehicles travel an average of 4,477 fewer miles per year (Note: approximately 7,205 kilometers).

The researchers speculate that this discrepancy may stem from the common practice among owners of pure electric vehicles to use them as a secondary vehicle alongside conventional or hybrid vehicles. In addition, they suggested that factors such as range anxiety and relatively underdeveloped charging infrastructure compared to the u.s.’s ubiquitous network of gas stations may also contribute to this phenomenon.

The average internal combustion engine vehicle travels 11,642 miles (18,735 kilometers) per year, while the average all-electric vehicle travels 7165 miles (11530 km). The gap is smaller in the SUV segment, where the average internal combustion engine vehicle travels 12,945 miles (20,832 kilometers) per year, compared with 10,587 miles (17,038 kilometers) per year for pure electric vehicles. Interestingly, the average Tesla travels 8,786 miles (14,139 kilometers) per year, while all other non-Tesla all-electric vehicles travel 6,235 miles (10,034 kilometers) per year.

Helveston also said studies like this should be used by policymakers and regulators to develop and enforce emissions regulations. For example, the latest analysis from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) assumes that electric vehicles have the same range as internal combustion engine vehicles, which is not the case.
