Steam official client Beta update released today, the official blog marked an important note: since January 1, 2024, Steam will no longer support Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 system.
In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to use a newer version of Windows.
The reason for this is that the latest features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, also known as a web shell. The latest stable version of Chrome 110 no longer supports older versions of Windows, so Steam will follow suit. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows features and security updates that are only available in Windows 10 and later.
This change will have a smaller impact on Steam hardware and software statistics afterwards, with Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 together now having less than 2% share, Windows 10 having 64.68% share, and the latest Windows 11 having 33.27% share.
