Sony’s next PS5 is likely to be slimmer with a removable disc drive

Sony’s PlayStation 5 lost weight in its latest release earlier this month, and there are rumors that the console will step up its efforts to continue slimming down next year. According to a report by Insider Gaming on Monday, a thinner PS5 will appear next year. It is rumored that the new console will not come with a disc drive installed. Instead, it will come with a removable disc drive that connects via USB-C to keep the slimmer body.

Internally, the console will have the same hardware and, according to Insider Gaming, the detachable drive can also be purchased separately in case this mechanical device is prone to damage.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

November 2023 will mark the third anniversary of the PS5’s release, and it’s possible that Sony will release new hardware at that time.

PlayStation VR 2 will be released sometime in 2023, with the last version of the virtual reality headset coming out in 2016, just a few weeks before the slimmed-down PS4 is released.
