Sony Playstation is currently facing a court case concerning an allegation that they overprice their games. The plaintiff is demanding a compensation of £5 billion for Sony abusing its position as the primary seller of PlayStation digital games. Consumer rights activist Alex Neill is the one championing this court case against Sony.

This case was filed with the Competition Appeal Tribunal on Friday and is far-reaching. If the plaintiff goes on to win the court case, everyone in the UK who bought a PlayStation digital game from the company from 19 August 2016 till date has an entitlement to compensation. The range of this compensation for “damage” ranges from £67-£562(~$79-$664) per individual.

According to Mr Alex Neill, “many vulnerable people rely on gaming for community and connection.” He went on to claim that the gaming company is pushing people deeper into an economic crisis. In his line of argument, he feels that the pricing of PlayStation games isn’t right as they are not taking into consideration the cost of living.

Mr Neill’s partner, in this case, says that the game console manufacturing company “deployed an anti-competitive strategy.” This said strategy is what the plaintiff and his partner believe to be the reason for Sony’s pricing of its games. We will keep a tab on this court case between Alex Neill and Sony Playstation to see its progression and outcome.
