In a blog post published yesterday, Sony hardware vice president Isabelle Tomatis announced that after more than two years of shortages, the PlayStation 5 console is now “in increased supply”. She wrote: “If you want to buy a PS5 console, you should now have an easier time finding it at retailers around the world.”
This is the second time this month that Sony has publicly stated that its PlayStation 5 supply woes are over, the first time being during a press conference at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.
In the blog post, Tomatis attributed the previous shortage to “unprecedented demand. According to analysts who watch Sony and the video game industry, that appears to be true, but there may be other factors at play, such as supply restrictions on some components related to the outbreak.
After thanking potential PlayStation buyers for their patience over the past few years, Tomatis noted that gamers in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg should be able to purchase at least one PS5 console through Sony’s direct.playstation.com store.
Despite supply shortages, the PlayStation 5 has sold almost as well in its first year as its predecessor did in the same period.
It’s worth noting that the PlayStation VR2 will go on sale next month, and Sony needs to make sure people can buy the PlayStation 5 so they can buy the VR2.
