Sega released the latest sales of its “Sonic the Hedgehog” series, claiming that the series has reached 1.5 billion achievements. This figure includes full premium game sales, as well as downloads of various free games in the Sonic the Hedgehog series released over the years.

The core of the Sonic the Hedgehog series is a series of racing 2D action games, but there are several other types of spin-offs. The series protagonist is the anthropomorphic blue hedgehog Sonic, whose peaceful life is often disrupted by the series’ main villain, Doctor Egghead, so Sonic usually has to stop Egghead and thwart his various plans for world domination.

The first game in the “Sonic the Hedgehog” series was released on the Mega Drive platform in 1991, when Sega attempted to create an iconic mascot and was conceived by the company’s Sonic Team (formerly Sega AM8), the work was successful and It developed into a series of consecutive games, which later transformed into Sega’s flagship game in the 16-bit era (the mid-1990s).

Sonic Team has since developed multiple entries in the series. Well-known members of the original Sonic Team were Yuji Naka, designer Nao Oshima, and game planner Hirokazu Yashara. Other Sonic game developers include Sega Technical Institute in the US, Dimps in Japan, Backbone Entertainment in the US, BioWare in Canada, Sumo Digital in the UK and Traveller’s Tales in the UK. Although the first game in the series was a platformer, it has since expanded into genres such as action-adventure, fighting, racing, role-playing, sports, and open areas.
