Samsung will mass produce 4nm SF4X process in the first half of the year

Samsung Electronics said it will present a paper on SF4X at the VLSI 2023 symposium in Japan. This is a 4nm foundry process for high-performance computing (HPC) customers and is expected to go into mass production in the first half of this year. In the paper, Samsung Electronics said that SF4X can optimize energy efficiency by 23% and improve performance by 10%.

Samsung Electronics began last year to subdivide its 4nm process from 2 to 5, gradually expanding semiconductor applications such as HPC and automotive semiconductors. Sources say Samsung is steadily improving the yield of its 4nm process through various measures recently.

Samsung Electronics plans to aggressively attract customers like Nvidia by mass-producing the SF4X process. The South Korean tech giant began mass production of the world’s first 3-nanometer chip for HPC in June 2022 and will begin mass production of the second-generation 3-nanometer process in 2024.
