Samsung to produce less than 300 million smartphones in 2023, Galaxy S23/Ultra series

According to TheElec, Samsung Electronics plans to produce 290.68 million smartphones in 2023. That’s 13 percent of the 334.2 million units the company has set as its production goal for 2022 by the end of 2021.

Manufacturers always set production targets about 10 percent higher than their shipment targets to have some units for marketing and inventory.

Samsung’s 2023 shipment target of 270 million units is slightly higher than the 260 million units Samsung believes it will eventually ship in 2022.

Of the 290.68 million units Samsung will produce next year, the Galaxy S23 series accounts for 32.63 million units. That’s similar to the 32.9 million units Samsung set as its target for the Galaxy S22.

Of those 32.63 million units: 14.74 million (45 percent) will be the Galaxy S23 Ultra; 12.47 million (38 percent) will be the Galaxy S23, and 5.42 million (17 percent) will be the Galaxy S23+.

Samsung also plans to launch production of 10.4 million units of its 5th generation folding screen phone next year. More than 6.86 million units of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 will be produced. 3.54 million units will be the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

The target of 10.4 million folding-screen phones is 6 percent higher than Samsung’s target for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4, which is 6.9 million and 2.9 million units, respectively, for a total of 9.8 million units.

Samsung’s current Galaxy Z Flip 4 shipments are lower than expected, so the Galaxy Z Flip 5 target is more conservative, the sources said.

Nevertheless, Samsung’s production target for the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Z 5 folding series plus traditional flagship models is still set at 60.46 million units, or 21 percent of its total production target of 290.68 million units.

Samsung’s flagship models also account for 20 percent of its total production target for 2022. Samsung has said that it expects growth in flagship smartphones in 2023 despite the economic downturn.

Meanwhile, Samsung is aiming to produce a total of 215.65 million units of the Galaxy A series next year; the Galaxy M series is set at 9.77 million units. 74 percent of Samsung’s total smartphone production target is for the Galaxy A series.
