Samsung to build chip development facility in Japan

Samsung Electronics will build a new development facility in Yokohama, according to Nikkei News, a highly symbolic move that is expected to boost cooperation between the Japanese and South Korean chip industries.

The new chip development facility will reportedly cost more than 30 billion yen and will be built in Yokohama, southwest of Tokyo, which is also currently home to Samsung’s Japan Research Institute. The facility will focus on “back-end” production, that is, packaging wafers into final products.

In fact, in March this year, it was announced that Samsung merged two R&D facilities in Yokohama and Osaka, and will create a comprehensive R&D center in Japan called DSRJ, and this new R&D center is located in the Samsung Yokohama Research Institute.

At the time, Samsung said that the main reason for merging the two R&D centers was the easing of relations between South Korea and Japan and that it wanted to establish a new R&D center for semiconductors and displays in Japan.

In addition, Samsung also wants to set up a new comprehensive research center for Device eXperience, the device experience division, in Japan under the name of “Samsung Research Japan”. The media believes that Samsung is trying to enhance its comprehensive development capabilities by reorganizing its R&D facilities related to device solutions.
