Samsung starts production of 89-inch MicroLED TVs: First LTPS TFT substrate

According to Korean media TheElec report, Samsung started production of 89-inch MicroLED TVs in the third quarter. This is the first time Samsung used an LTPS TFT glass substrate instead of a printed circuit board MicroLED TV.

However, the source said that Samsung’s 101-inch and 114-inch LTPS TFT MicroLED TVs have not yet started production.

Samsung originally planned to start production of the 89-inch and 101-inch models in May, but due to supply chain issues and low yields, the production date was postponed and production of the 89-inch model has not started until now.

The exact reason for the delay is still unclear, and the final price of the 89-inch model has yet to be announced, with TheElec noting that Samsung set the price at around $80,000 (around R566,000) before production began, well below the previous MicroLED TV models, but still very expensive for a TV.

In addition, all three sizes use a 34 x 85 micron LED chip from Taiwanese LED company PlayNitride, which is the smallest LED chip Samsung has used to date.
