Samsung says a single SSD capacity could reach 1PB (1024TB) in the next decade

Samsung has said in its participation in the China Flash Memory Market Summit that the capacity of a single SSD could reach 1PB (1024TB) in the next 10 years.

Samsung says the increasing maturity of physical scaling technology, logical scaling technology and packaging technology is accelerating the development of 3D NAND, which is expected to enable a single SSD capacity of up to 1PB in the next decade.

Samsung said the new technology will further reduce NAND flash cell size and increase the number of layers, allowing each layer to store more data.

Samsung has pushed SSD technology to the ground over the past few years, being the first to mass-produce a 15.36TB SSD in 2016 and then launching a 30.72TB product based on 3D TLC in 2017.

Samsung is also showing 64TB SSDs in 2019 and then 128TB prototype SSDs based on 3D QLC NAND in 2021, but these devices are not yet in volume production.
