Samsung responded to the sacrifice of mature process orders for 3nm: not consistent with the facts

Iin response to the “3nm process technology manpower constraints and stop accepting orders for mature processes” rumors, Samsung Electronics official response today said that the news does not match the facts and misleading to the market.

Samsung said that the mature process is an important part of Samsung Electronics’ foundry business and the company will continue to expand the application of the mature process, while the company is doing its best to strengthen Samsung’s technological competitiveness by steadily securing manpower for advanced process nodes such as 3nm.

Yesterday, a Korean media report said that Samsung is facing difficulties in manufacturing chips based on the 3nm process because of a shortage of talent in the semiconductor field. The report said Samsung has reassigned some of its fab employees from traditional processes to 3nm processes (or lower) and is no longer accepting orders from IC design companies for chips based on 130nm and 65nm nodes.

Samsung Electronics semiconductor business revenue for the fourth quarter of 2022 was 20.07 trillion won (currently about 108.779 billion RMB) and operating profit was 270 billion won (currently about 1.463 billion RMB), down 96.9 percent year-over-year.
