Samsung today announced the launch of its 5G vRAN 3.0 update and confirmed plans to begin deploying to the North American market in the first half of 2023. Samsung hopes to use the U.S. as a starting point to deliver its next-generation virtual RAN capabilities to operators worldwide.

Samsung is the only vendor doing large-scale commercial vRAN deployments with top carriers in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

The 5G vRAN 3.0 technology includes a range of new “smart” features and is optimized for forward-looking operators with a number of projects. According to the roadmap, the company is also demonstrating the proven intelligent network capabilities of its vRAN.

Samsung’s vRAN 3.0 features advanced functions/features, including increased bandwidth support for massive MIMO radios, analysis of hourly traffic patterns to optimize network operating conditions, and the use of “sleep mode” to automate the network to save energy consumption.

Samsung’s 5G vRAN has been successfully deployed in commercial networks with performance comparable to that of hardware-based legacy devices,” said Ji-Yun Seol, vice president of Samsung Electronics. We are accelerating the next phase of vRAN software development — Samsung’s vRAN 3.0.”

According to Samsung.com, its vRAN solution “allows operators to perform network functions and deliver services that are not possible or difficult to achieve with traditional RAN. Our vRAN is O-RAN compliant, capable of running 2G, 4G and 5G networks, and can run 4G and 5G simultaneously. virtualized RANs are eco-friendly and can reduce power consumption by reducing or turning off the energy required on antennas, amplifiers and base stations.”
