Samsung applies for dual under-screen camera patents, supports face recognition

Samsung may be developing an under-screen face recognition system that includes two under-screen cameras.

Samsung filed a patent application with KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Information Service) back in March 2021, and the document was made public last week and was included in a Dutch publication.

The patent describes the method as acquiring multiple images of the user from two angles to better build a 3D model of the face and use it for identity verification. However, Samsung specifically mentions the use of an under-screen camera.

Samsung has only experimented with an under-screen camera on its Galaxy Z Fold product line and is not more widely on board.

Judging from the patent, it may be necessary to place a camera near the bottom of the phone, close to where the under-screen fingerprint is located, or perhaps even combine the two into one optical module.

In addition, the patent mentions measuring pupil size, which varies in humans depending on lighting conditions, and is expected to be used as an additional security measure to prevent the use of things like photos or masks to spoof face recognition.
