Samsung Electronics today announced its first ultra-wideband (UWB) solution, the Exynos Connect U100.

Samsung Electronics said the new ultra-wideband UWB solution is optimized for mobile, automotive and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, improving measurement accuracy to single-digit centimetres to provide accurate distance and location information.

In addition, Samsung also revealed a new brand of short-range wireless communication solutions – “Exynos Connect”, such as ultra-wideband, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which Samsung says are essential in today’s increasingly connected world.

According to reports, ultra-wideband (UWB) is a short-range wireless communication technology that works on a wide spectrum, enabling fast data transmission with low power. With its ability to capture high-precision spatial and directional data, UWB is gaining popularity in various industries such as remote payments, smart keys, smart homes, and smart factories.

Samsung Electronics Exynos ConnectU100 uses time-of-arrival (ToA) and 3D angle-of-arrival (AoA) ranging to provide single-digit centimeters and accuracy below 5 degrees. Meanwhile, the new U100 integrates radio frequency (RF), baseband, embedded flash memory (eFlash) memory, and power management IP into one chip.

Samsung Electronics pointed out that with the power saving mode, the U100 can extend the battery life of mobile and automotive solutions, as well as IoT devices such as smart trackers with limited battery capacity. For reliable communication, the U100 is also equipped with a Scrambled Timestamp Sequence (STS) function and a safe and reliable hardware encryption engine to prevent external hacking.

Currently, the Samsung Exynos Connect U100 has been certified by the FiRa (Precise Ranging) Alliance. The U100 is also compliant with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) Digital Key Version 3.0 standard, which is designed to store, authenticate and share digital keys for vehicles.
