Rivian R1S Electric SUV begins deliveries

The Rivian R1T has been out for months, but its sibling, the R1S, has only just begun deliveries to outside customers.

The R1S has a third row of seats and an enclosed tailgate, but it’s shorter in length and wheelbase than the R1T electric truck. The first R1S was delivered to in-house CEO RJ Scaringe and CFO Claire McDonough in December of last year.

In June, Rivian said that customer delivery of the R1S could start as early as August, so they’re pretty punctual, even though Rivian first planned deliveries around March to April.

Now, the SUV is finally on the road, or rather, several of them already are. This is reportedly the first non-employee delivery order to date.

One of the vehicles is owned by Kyle Shultz of the Rivian Stories show, who reportedly ordered it originally in November 2018, nearly three years after the R1S was first introduced.

While Shultz is not a Rivian employee, he has been an insider in the Rivian community, so this could be considered a “VIP” delivery among customers in a way.

In addition, Skyler, another Rivian Stories host, also took delivery of his R1S on the same day, both of which were built at Rivian’s facility in Normal, Illinois.
