Qualcomm: Samsung Galaxy S23/Ultra series will only use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip

According to the latest rumors, Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy S23 series of phones in the first week of February 2023, and all models this year are expected to use the same chipset worldwide. Qualcomm’s latest earnings call pretty much confirms that these rumors are true.

During Qualcomm’s latest earnings call, Qualcomm CFO Akash Palkhiwala confirmed expectations for a strong second half of the March 2023 quarter (Q1), which could coincide with sales of Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series phones in the early months. He also confirmed that Qualcomm has moved from a 75 percent (chipset) share of the Galaxy S22 series to a global share — meaning Qualcomm’s chipsets will be available for all models in the Galaxy S23 series.

"So, from a March perspective, you're right, the benefits of the new phones that Samsung is launching will manifest themselves in the second half of the March quarter. So it will come at the end of the quarter, but it will be advantageous while our share goes up from 75 percent of the G S22 to the G S23 globally."

All three phones of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series (S23, S23 + and S23 Ultra) have appeared on the Geekbench website, fully powered by the so-called Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.

Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm, confirmed the multi-year partnership with Samsung, which will bring Snapdragon chips to all high-end Samsung Galaxy phones worldwide.

"On the handset side, we have a new multi-year agreement with Samsung to expand the use of the Snapdragon platform globally for future high-end Samsung Galaxy products."

In July analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Qualcomm was likely to be the sole processor supplier for Samsung’s Galaxy S23 thanks to its next-generation flagship 5G chip, the SM8550 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2), which is manufactured using TSMC 4nm (70% of S22 shipments).

A report last month still suggests that despite the disappointing internal Exynos chip in the Samsung MX (Mobile), the possibility of a Galaxy S23 series with an Exynos chip cannot be ruled out.

The 2022 Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit will be held from November 14 to 17 this year and is expected to release flagship chips such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
