Qualcomm Introduces Snapdragon X Series of PC Chips Based on Oryon CPU Technology

Qualcomm announced the launch of Snapdragon X (pronounced “ex” instead of 10) series chips.

This series of chips is based on a customized Oryon CPU core for laptops and is designed to compete with Apple’s custom chip, the Apple Silicon.

Qualcomm noted that the Oryon CPUs themselves will deliver “a huge leap in performance and power efficiency”. It added that the combination of CPU and NPU will result in a better device experience, which is indicative of the growing trend of generative AI.

It’s worth noting that the series will co-exist with the existing Snapdragon compute platform tier, not replace it.

Simply put, if the Snapdragon 8cx is benchmarked against the Intel Core i5 (which is what Qualcomm itself claims), then the Snapdragon X series is intended to compete with the Core i9.

Prior to this, Qualcomm had evolved into Kryo by tweaking Arm’s core design with IP such as Cortex-X2, but it was still essentially a Cortex core.

Now that Qualcomm has an architectural license after acquiring Nuvia, the company can develop a chip from scratch, and all it needs to do is design it to follow the same instruction set, allowing Qualcomm to develop SoCs like Apple.

But it’s a shame that Qualcomm only released the “Snapdragon X” brand rather than a specific product today, and it’s expected that Qualcomm will unveil the full extent of this product at the Snapdragon Summit in a couple of weeks.
