OSAT makers vying for business to package 5G chips for Apple’s iPhone SE 4

According to DigiTimes, several OSAT vendors, including ASE Technology and Amkor Technology, are vying for the business of packaging 5G modem chips for Apple’s iPhone SE 4.

The report that the two companies mentioned in the report have experience in packaging 5G communication modules for Qualcomm. It is unclear whether Apple’s self-made 5G chip performance can be comparable to Qualcomm’s chip. In the foreseeable future, Apple will increase its own research efforts to reduce production costs.

Qualcomm CEO Ammon recently said at MWC 2023 that Apple may equip its own 5G modem chip in the iPhone 16 series, and the industry expects TSMC to eat 3nm foundry orders.

Previously, supply chain vendors said Apple’s in-house 5G modem chip, codenamed Ibiza, will use TSMC’s 3nm process, and the supporting RF IC will use TSMC’s 7nm process, which is expected to be introduced into Apple’s iPhone 16 series in 2024.
