Ookla report: The global 5G network speed averages down 168.27Mbps

Ookla in a report released today shared the global 5G network performance after recently announcing a list of the fastest 5G phones in 10 countries and regions around the world. In the report shows that the global 5G network downlink speed in the 3rd quarter of 2022 averaged 168.27 Mbps, 1% faster than 166.13 Mbps in the same period last year; however, the average uplink speed was 18.71 Mbps, 12% slower than 21.08 Mbps in the same period last year.

Ookla wrote in the report:

"5G is no longer a new technology, though consumers in many countries and regions are still waiting for 5G to fully play out (or even for some countries and regions to connect to 5G at all).

We looked at data from Speedtest Intelligence® for the third quarter of 2022 to see how 5G performance has changed since last year, where download speeds are the fastest at the country level, and how satellite technology offers additional connectivity options. We also looked at countries that don't yet have 5G to see where consumers are seeing improvements in 4G LTE access."

The top 10 countries and regions with the fastest 5G performance have seen some changes in the last year. South Korea and the United Arab Emirates now lead the way with median download speeds of more than 500 Mbps. Meanwhile, Brazil and Bahrain round out the list with median 5G download speeds of just over 300 Mbps.

In the U.S., Ookla’s latest research found that T-Mobile has a median download speed of 193.06, Verizon 119.80 and AT&T 81.22 Mbps. While the U.S. is not #1 in 5G speeds, it is the only country to offer 5G networks to more than 50% of 5G phones in terms of 5G subscriber size. This is no doubt due to T-Mobile’s leadership in 5G deployment, with Verizon and AT&T following suit with their own C-band infrastructure.
