According to Omdia’s latest market research report, Sony continues to dominate the global CMOS image sensor (CIS) market. Sony’s CIS sales in the third quarter amounted to $2.442 billion, accounting for 51.6 percent of the total.
By comparison, Samsung, currently the second largest CIS supplier, held only 15.6% of the market. In addition, Howell Technologies, ON Semiconductor, and GalaxyCore followed with 9.7 percent, 7.0 percent and 4.0 percent shares, respectively; in sixth place, SK Hynix was about to enter the top five with a 3.8 percent share.
Samsung’s CMOS image sensor sales reportedly reached $740 million in the third quarter of 2022, down from $800-900 million in previous quarters.
Market watchers say that one of the reasons for Sony’s success is that the Japanese tech giant has secured orders for devices like the Xiaomi 12S Ultra. The latest Xiaomi 13 Pro continues the superb reputation of Leica images from the Xiaomi 12S Ultra and features Sony’s latest IMX 989 sensor.
In 2021, Samsung’s CMOS image sensor market share is 29%, while Sony’s is 46%. In 2022, Sony seems to continue to widen the gap with the runner-up, and market watchers believe that this trend will continue.
Notably, Sony is expected to supply CMOS image sensors for Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 series, which could further boost its lead.
