NXP launched First 28nm SAF85xx Radar SoC: Automatic Emergency Braking and Blind Spot Detection

0

NXP Semiconductors announced the launch of a new 28nm RFCMOS radar single-chip family for next-generation ADAS and autonomous driving systems. The new SAF85xx single-chip family integrates NXP’s high-performance radar sensing capabilities and processing technology to provide Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs with greater flexibility to support short-, medium- and long-range radar applications and meet more challenging NCAP safety requirements.

NXP’s new family of automotive radar SoCs includes high-performance radar transceivers and integrates a multi-core radar processor built on NXP’s S32R radar computing platform. The SAF85xx doubles RF performance and increases signal processing speed by 40 percent compared to NXP’s previous generation products. The single-chip family provides 4D sensing for corner and forward radar for a wide range of safety-critical ADAS applications such as automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, lateral traffic warnings and automated parking. Thanks to the increased flexibility offered by the new family, OEMs can meet the expanding NCAP safety requirements and the surge in the number of radar sensors, with some analysts expecting at least five radar sensors to be installed in every vehicle in the future.

NXP’s new radar single-chip family provides reliable support for remote object detection and can also distinguish small objects next to large ones, such as cars on heavily trafficked multi-lane highways and fast-moving motorcycles around trucks. The small form factor of the single-chip family allows customers to build radar sensor modules up to 30 percent smaller in size.

The following is a description of NXP’s third-generation RFCMOS radar platform.

(a) Based on RFCMOS technology, NXP has achieved mass production of automotive radars, with tens of millions shipped to date.

A highly integrated 77 GHz radar smart transceiver SoC with four high-performance transmitters, four receivers, a multi-core radar processor with hardware gas pedal, and a Gigabit Ethernet communication interface and memory.

Compliant with automotive functional safety level ASIL B requirements, ISO 26262 functional safety standard and ISO / SAE 21434 automotive cyber security standard regulations to meet the automotive industry’s functional safety and information security requirements.

NXP is ready to sample the SAF85xx radar family for key customers, with enhancements for next-generation OEM platforms that leverage NXP’s full suite of radar sensor solutions for 360-degree safety wrap-around detection of vehicles.

The scalable sensing solutions are suitable for a wide range of applications from corner radar to high-resolution 4D imaging radar. the S32R platform offers a common architecture for software reuse and faster development, as well as a high-performance hardware security engine that supports OTA updates and complies with the latest cybersecurity standards.
