Nothing Phone (1) starts pushing Android 13 / Nothing OS 1.5.2 release

Nothing pushed out the first Nothing OS 1.5 Beta for the Nothing Phone (1) in December last year, giving users the chance to experience Android 13 before the stable version was rolled out. Now Nothing has started rolling out Nothing OS 1.5.2 stable version for the smartphone.

The download size is about 157MB when upgrading from the previous public beta, which also comes with the January 2023 Android security patch. The upgrade is currently limited to public beta users and is expected to be available to all users in the coming week.

Here are the updates:

Weather app

  • New Nothing Weather app
  • Clicking on the weather widget on the home screen now opens the corresponding city directly in the app instead of opening a link.

Customization features

  • All new Glyph sound package with more ringtones and notification sounds.
  • More color schemes are available in the wallpaper selector.
  • New collection of minimalist wallpapers.
  • Icons can match the background color to make the home screen look more consistent.
  • Lock screen shortcuts customization. Create shortcuts for cameras, flashlights, device controls, and wallets.

Improved experience

  • Easily switch data usage when using dual cards with an improved network quick settings panel.
  • Automatically display the current network and show the amount of mobile data used in quick settings.
  • Scan QR codes directly in the camera app. The scanner also appears as a shortcut in Quick Settings.
  • Select language preferences for different applications.

Visual improvements

  • The new look of media controls. Show the album artfully and have wider music controls.
  • Improved volume settings panel. Allows refinement of volume controls without unlocking the device.
  • Improved game mode light notifications. As a result, users are less distracted when playing games.
  • Smoother animation of the display when transitioning between on and off.
  • More refined camera app interface.

Privacy and security

  • Get alerts when apps access the clipboard. Clear history after a period of time to prevent unwanted access.
  • Add personal security app.
  • Better privacy protection, including photo picker, nearby Wi-Fi device permissions, and select media permissions.

System performance

  • Fingerprint unlock accuracy improved by 12 percent.
  • 71% faster app launch.
  • Standby power consumption improved by up to 50%.
  • Implemented a new self-healing feature that periodically deletes unused system dumps and caches.
  • Improved system stability.
  • General bug fixes.

Nothing Phone (1) is the company’s first smartphone powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G+ chip. The smartphone comes with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 memory and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The phone comes with Android 12 pre-installed with NothingOS 1.0.

The Nothing Phone (1) offers 50MP dual rear cameras, including a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera and a 50MP Samsung JN1 ultra wide-angle sensor. A 16-megapixel selfie camera is on the front. The smartphone features a 120Hz OLED display with 1200nits peak brightness (initially limited) and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

The Nothing Phone (1) is powered by a 4500mAh battery and supports 33W fast charging, as well as 15W Qi wireless charging and 5W, reverse wireless charging.
