Nokia announced today that the company has completed the test of a new 5G network slicing solution, which allows Android users to purchase and activate network slices from their operators on demand. This new service will be launched simultaneously after the release of the Android 14 system.

Network slicing is the practice of splitting physical network infrastructure into multiple virtual networks, where individual slices can provide better, customizable services to apps. For example, users can activate network slicing through a local cloud gaming app to achieve better network performance and lower latency; when watching live sports events, users can activate network slicing to instantly view highlights.

With this new capability, operators will be able to further monetize 5G slicing services by, among other things, offering premium network slicing, Nokia said. The new products will support all 4G and 5G devices, which will enable mobile operators to leverage a broad ecosystem of devices and network assets, thereby increasing profitability.

It was previously reported that Ericsson, OPPO and Qualcomm successfully tested 5G enterprise network slicing on commercial smartphones last year, paving the way for wider deployment of the technology. Network slicing is seen by operators as one of the biggest revenue opportunities for standalone 5G networks.
